I would say both are better, for one is incomplete without the other. When you see any movie online and if you ever happen to watch it through the credits, in the end, you will see that every movie will have animators/ 3D ARTISTS and VFX. So, certainly one needs the help of both of animation and visual effects. But by a large, the masses distinguish between the both by calling animation cartoon like and VFX as a real one.
