BITS-Pilani would be the better choice if the interest of engineering discipline is towards computer science/ electronics as it has got stupendous placements in these domains. However, this doesn't imply that NIT-Surathkal has a poor placement record in CS/EC. Its just that, BITS has got an upper edge in these domains than NIT-S. If you want to go for core branches like Civil/Mech., go for NIT-S. The campus life of BITS is awesome whereas NIT-S has its own beach where students can tranquilize. Both the institutions are good and have their own pros and cons. I suggest you to select one as per your branch and preferences.

As even the students of manufacturing get into oracle taking away a package of 22 lacs per annum so you can't really compare a branch specifically.

For BITSAT-
Speed is the key
BITSAT paper pattern: 150 questions in a 3-hour duration.
This accounts for an average speed of 0.833 question per min.
Comparing this with JEE Mains ( 90 questions in 3 hours ), we get an avg. of 0.5 question per min.

This accounts for an average speed of 0.833 question per min.
Comparing this with JEE Mains ( 90 questions in 3 hours ), we get an avg. of 0.5 question per min. Apparently, you need to be almost twice as fast!
So here are some tips to increase your speed:
(Note that you need to inculcate these in your habit, keep them in mind while you are preparing)
Write as less as possible. Skip unnecessary steps and calculations.
No need to solve till you get the exact answer. Try predicting the range of your answer and select the most appropriate option.
Take advantage of the MCQ pattern. Have a look at the options before you start solving. This is very helpful in Maths( Trigonometry, Integrals, etc.) as you get an idea of the form the answer is required in.
Do not spend too much time on one question. Develop a habit of gauging a question in the first look. If you have no idea how to go about it, skip it straight away!
Strategy for attempting the paper
Have a look at one or two sample papers (sample questions are available on the BITS site) online or in some book. It’ll be the best if you attempt at least one paper at the designated time and plan out a strategy for yourself. The following suggestions may be useful:
Chemistry in BITSAT is more theoretical than numerical. If you remember the theory well (tip: revise it a day before), you'll be able to complete the section in 30-45 minutes.
English and logical reasoning section may seem new to you if you had been preparing for JEE as well, but it can be a rank booster. Practice logical reasoning questions beforehand so as to get an idea. For English, I won't suggest you prepare beforehand. This section should take you another half hour at max.
If physics is your strength, you can score pretty well in BITSAT. Try attempting them all but also do not engage yourself too much.
Now, the make-or-break section for your score is maths. The level of questions is similar to JEE Mains only a little less lengthy. Keep up with the speed as well as accuracy. (TIP: if a question seems to be very complicated or long, most probably you're getting it wrong. Reread the question with a fresh outlook. Such questions are not included in the paper).

BITS is any day better than VIT for any specialization. The pedagogy, infrastructure, and placements are far better than VIT. Plus, the campus life you get at BITS Pilani is amazing and unmatched. So, I would suggest you to go to BITS!
