You must ensure that you completed 10+2 with 45% marks in Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry or equivalent vocational subject. A three-year engineering diploma is also considered for admission to the VELS Institute of Science, Technology, and Advanced Studies (B.Tech. in Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering). You will also be required to sit the VELS Entrance Examination (VEE), which tests your aptitude in such fields. The core areas, which are physics, mathematics, and chemistry, need to be strengthened besides the fundamentals of naval engineering. Practical experience acquired through internships or workshops can also expose you to the maritime industry. You should be in touch with current students or alumni for good advice on research opportunities relating to naval architecture. Thus, by focusing on these aspects, you'll increase the chances of getting into the program and then preparing for a good academic trajectory.

The VELS Institute is known for its specialized programs, especially in Naval Architecture, Offshore Engineering, and Petroleum Engineering. It provides quality education and industry-aligned courses. However, the classification would come under Tier 2 institutions in Chennai. This category reveals that although it provides excellent learning opportunities, it is not as revered as a Tier 1 institution like IIT Madras and Indian Maritime University. Placement success is vastly variable from one course to the next: some are relatively successful, others have witnessed very deep problems, especially in Marine Engineering, where placement is usually extremely low. Overall, VELS Institute is one of those options that ocean engineers should take into consideration, of course, not in comparison with some of the older institutions present in Chennai.

VELS Institute of Science, Technology, and Advanced Studies (VISTAS) has its School of Ocean Engineering classified as Tier 2. This keeps in view the reality that, as compared to the broader Indian higher education, it is so rated for providing specialized programs in ocean engineering but not to the prestige tagged to Tier 1 institutions. VELS University has really scaled up through quality education in various undergraduate and postgraduate programs tagged to industrial needs.
