The University of Jammu is accredited as 'A+' grade university by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council of India. It came into existence in 1969 via Kashmir and Jammu Universities Act 1969 following the bifurcation of the erstwhile University of Jammu and Kashmir. Moreover, over fifty government and non-government colleges are affiliated with the University of Jammu. The university is also recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

These hostels cater to undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD students. PhD students are provided with single rooms, while others share rooms. Since all the hostels are located on campus, there is no requirement for external PG accommodations. Furthermore, near the Central University of Kashmir, there are reasonably priced PGs and hostels such as Dhiraj PG, Sharma Paying Guest House, Raina PG, etc., which are conveniently located in close proximity to the institute itself.
