Q:   Why do Indian students choose to study at Minnesota State University?

A:

Well it has many reasons. First and the foremost is high acceptance rate which is 77%. MSU is not situated in a big city so for Indian students accommodation is less and so are other expenses. Part-time jobs are also available and students end up saving some bucks.  There is high graduate success rate of with 94% of students employed and over 12% students continuing education. Moreover it is a state university so fee is also not that much compared to private universities and colleges adding to the reasons why Indian students choose to study here.

Q:   Is getting part-time jobs easy while studying at Minnesota State University?

A:

Hi Preeti, getting a part time job in Minnesota state university isn’t that difficult however there are two types of targeted part  time jobs and both have their differences as per the demand. If you are looking for on-campus jobs then there could be a bit of hustle as everyone else wants the same. I mean who doesn’t want to land a part time job while not leaving the campus. You can easily manage your classes and your part-time so because of competition it might get a bit tricky but if you got something to prove you’ll right away get it be up with your communication skills and market yourself well. But, don’t worry if you don’t land on an on campus job, there are plenty off campus jobs available for getting these the university itself has a portal called ‘Handshake’ and to be honest it’s good you can find part time jobs there as well or you can try indeed too. So, yes it isn’t that difficult here and almost every student is working somewhere.

Q:   What is Minnesota State University famous for?

A:

Well it is famous for a few things. It is very affordable and has a wide range of programs to offer to students. It has a strong regional ranking as well and high graduate success rate too. Adding to this the university has students from all around the world so diversity is also the reason why students choose this university.

Q:   Will my campus life be better at Minnesota State University than staying off-campus?

A:

Whether your campus life will be better at Minnesota State University (MSU)  than living off-campus depends on your priorities and personality. Here's a breakdown of the pros and cons of each option to help you decide:

Living on Campus:

Pros:

Convenience: Close proximity to classes, dining halls, libraries, and campus events. No commute required.

Community: Easier to connect with classmates, participate in campus activities, and build a social life. Resident Assistants (RAs) can also provide support and guidance.

Amenities: Some residence halls offer amenities like laundry facilities, fitness centers, and game rooms. Meal plans can be convenient, especially for busy students.

Cons:

Cost: On-campus housing can be more expensive than off-campus options, especially with a meal plan.

Less Privacy: Dorm rooms are typically smaller and shared with a roommate. There might be stricter rules and regulations compared to off-campus living.

Less Freedom: Limited control over your living environment and amenities compared to an off-campus apartment.

Living Off-Campus:

Pros:

Cost: Potentially cheaper than on-campus housing, especially if you share an apartment with roommates. More control over your budget.

Privacy and Freedom: More control over your living environment, roommates (if any), and daily routine. Generally fewer restrictions compared to dorms.

Potentially More Space: Off-campus apartments can offer more space and amenities like in-unit laundry or a backyard.

Cons:

Commute: You'll need to factor in travel time to campus, which can eat into your study time and social life.

Sense of Community: Building a social network might require more effort compared to living on campus. You might miss out on some spontaneous interactions and events.

Responsibilities: You'll be responsible for managing utilities, bills, and potentially maintaining the property (depending on the lease agreement).

Here are some additional factors to consider: Your personality: Do you thrive on social interaction or prefer more independence?

Your budget: Can you comfortably afford on-campus housing, or is affordability a major concern?

Your academic goals: Would living on campus help you stay focused and involved, or do you need a quieter environment to study?

Ultimately, the best choice depends on your individual needs and preferences. Consider visiting MSU's campus and talking to current students living on and off-campus to get a better feel for the atmosphere. I personally live off- campus and so do most of my friends and other Indian students. But, the choice is always yours, cheers!

Q:   Is it possible to get into Minnesota State University's MBA programme without work experience?

A:

Yes, MSU doesn’t require you to have a specific number of years or months of work experience (For all UG and most Masters courses). This requirement is generally for executive MBA’s. Other than that you can take up any course in MSU and it won’t require a work experience. So, if you are planning for a general full time MBA, work experience won’t be required.

A:

Yes, undisputedly there are students from other countries studying in MSU. The university does claim that the International students are from around 100 countries however not to speak of the facts, I can possibly say that as per my observation there are students from all across the world all the 7 continents. The university is very diverse in terms of geographical distribution of students or even the male female student ratio.

A:

Yes it is relatively easily to get into this university as the acceptance rate is pretty high, it is 77% to be precise and if you are applying for a UG programme here, 65-75% in CBSE is well enough also that the SAT’s are optional so I think that it can not be more easy. IELTS requirement is also comparatively low which is 5.5 and above so yes an average Indian student can definitely join MSU if he/she has adequate funds and documents.

From Minnesota State Universities end:

Form I-20: This document is essential. MSU will issue it after you're accepted and confirm your intention to enroll. It verifies your status as a full-time student in a SEVIS-approved program.

From You end :

-        Valid Passport: Your passport needs to be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in the US.

-        Nonimmigrant Visa Application (DS-160): This online form captures your biographical information, travel details, and other visa-related information.

-        Visa Application Fee: You'll need to pay a fee to the US Department of State for processing your visa application.

-        Optional Documents: While not mandatory, including documents like letters of recommendation, standardized test scores (ACT/SAT), or a portfolio (for art or design programs) can strengthen your application.

Additional Considerations:

Medical Examination: You might need a medical examination by a US-designated physician depending on the regulations in place at the time of your application.

Visa Interview: Be prepared for a visa interview at the US consulate or embassy in India. During the interview, explain your study plans and convince the visa officer of your intent to return to India after completing your studies.

Q:   How is applying to the Minnesota State University different from applying to other universities in USA?

A:

There is not much of a difference everything is similar be it applying to university or Visa Process. However if you are applying for Undergraduate program, SAT and ACT is optional so that is a plus point. Rest, I believe that everything is similar.

On Fees and Eligibility

Q:   How expensive is it to live at Minnesota State University?

A:

I believe that you are asking for on-campus housing but I’ll give you the information about the both types of housing you can take here either in campus or nearby. If you take up a double sharing room for an entire academic year, it’ll cost you around 6600 $ and lets say you take up a full bath single in a 3 person suite for an academic year  then it’ll cost you a good amount of about 9300 $. You can do the monthly maths here. For food, anytime meal will cost around 3300 $/year. However, if not the campus housing there are options outside too. From 500-700 $/bedroom +bathroom are the rates outside and here best thing is food is upto you. Around 150-200$ is enough. So, lets say if you are living outside and sum up your expenses for a month including entertainment and transportation I don’t think an average life living student will go beyond spending 1100-1200 $/month.

Q:   Is a score of 85 in TOEFL good for Minnesota State University?

A:

Yes it is enough to get into MSU. The university has a minimum requirement of 61 in TOEFL (iBT), 5.5 or better in IELTS and 95 above in duolingo.

Q:   Is Minnesota state University cheaper than Mercy College?

A:

Mercy college is a private college and MSU is public both are located in different states of US. While MSU is in Mankato, Mercy college in located in New York. If I compare average fee paid of both colleges then MSU has 8800 $ as compared to Mercy college's 15283 $. Also since New York is expensive considering the living costs there, It is clearly evident that MSU is way cheaper than Mercy college.

Q:   How much money is required in Indian rupees to study at Minnesota State University?

A:

Totally depends on your course, duration and where and how you want to live. Let’s consider that you are going for a two year master program. On calculating average tution fee, the sum is 11 lakh/year. So, for 2 years that sums up to 22 Lakhs. Now lets consider the accommodation and living expenses. The average cost incurred in living expenses by an Indian student in Minnesota per month is 1000 $ (Food, Travel, Accommodation, entertainment) which sums up to 12000$ per year which comes roughly around 10 Lakhs/year (Considering exchange rate to be 1$=82 INR) adding 2 year costs it is 20 Lakhs. If we add Air tickets and other miscellaneous costs to it, it comes around 45 Lakhs for a two year Masters course. This cost can go up by a 2-3 Lakhs (Keep that in mind). So, I would say that it would take you around 45-48 Lakhs to study in MSU for 2 year master program.
