History
The University of Winnipeg received its charter in 1967, but its roots date back to more than 145 years. A timeline of the university’s history started with Manitoba College being established in 1871. In 1877, Wesley College’s charter was granted to the Methodist Church. In 1896, Wesley Hall opened. In 1931, Manitoba College sold its property and joined with Wesley College in the teaching of Theology. Then, in 1938, Manitoba College and Wesley College joined to become United College. Finally, in 1967, the United College received its charter and became the University of Winnipeg. In 2003, the university’s Board of Regents established the University of Winnipeg Foundation. In 2017, the university celebrated its 50th anniversary.
