What’s new?

Kathmandu University is an autonomous and self-funding public university in Nepal established by the Act of Parliament in 1991. It focuses on maintaining a higher standard of academic education in several professional areas of study. The university’s mission is to provide quality education to students to inculcate in them the qualities of a leader. Its vision is to become a world-class university to enhance the technological advancement and knowledge of the students. More than 10% of the students receive scholarships apart from educational loans and other sponsoring schemes from different organizations. The university has various inter-departmental and departmental clubs for students to gain more experience and enhance their thinking processes. It includes the Green Club of Thoughts, Youth for Change, Robotics Club, Music and Culture, Rotaract Club, and so on.

Eligibility & Documents Required

 

What are the eligibility requirements?

 

The eligibility criteria for international applicants are:

 

Undergraduate Admissions

Students are required to meet the following criteria to be eligible for the undergraduate program:

  • Have a 10+2 level high school certificate from a recognized school or institution, with an overall average of 50%.
  • Minimum 50% in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology as per the program’s requirement.
  • GPA 2.4 or 50% is required in the PCM test.

 

Graduate Admissions

Students must have a bachelor's degree with a 2.5 GPA or 50% aggregate from a recognized university.

 

Doctorate Admissions

Students are required to have a master's degree with 50% marks on average. CGPS of 3 or above is required on a scale of 4, or grade B is accepted. Students must have completed a minimum of 17 years of study.

Application & Tuition Fees

 

Is there any application fees?

 

Kathmandu University charges an application fee between NPR 1,000-1,500 for its programs, which is non-refundable.

 

What is the fee structure of courses offered by the university?

 

International students pay the same fees as domestic students, which usually changes each fiscal year. You can expect the fees to be within the following ranges:

Scholarships & Financial Aid

 

Is there any scholarship or financial aid available for international students?

 

Kathmandu University offers various scholarships to all incoming students based on merit or need. The scholarships are based on merit, academic excellence, and financial needs. Presently, it has the following school-wise scholarship programs:

  • Scholarships in KU SOS (for students in KU School of Science Programs)
  • Scholarships in KU SOE (for students in KU School of Engineering Programs)
  • Scholarships in KU SOM (for students in KU School of Management Programs)
  • Scholarships in KU SOED (for students in KU School of Education Programs)
  • Scholarships in KU SOA (for students in KU School of Arts Programs)
  • Scholarships in KU SOMS (for students in KU School of Medical Sciences Programs)

Admission Process

 

When do the admissions start?

 

The university offers admissions in the Fall session (July 2025 to September 2025) for all undergraduate and most graduate programs. However, some master's and research courses may have more than one intake as per the respective department’s decision. Each department and course has specific deadlines.

 

What is the UG and PG application process?

 

The application process is the same for both undergraduate and graduate applicants. The standard admission process includes:

  • Entrance Test (paper- or computer-based)
  • Analytical Essay Writing
  • Group Discussion
  • Personal Interview

 

Each school has its own application form. Thus, applicants need to visit the respective school website and use its online google form.

 

When will I hear from the university after I submit my application?

 

There is no fixed admission decision date. After the interview students will hear from the university as soon as possible.

 

Student Diversity & Preferred Profile

 

What are the chances to get into this university?

 

Kathmandu University is moderately selective in its review process. However, it does have very limited seats in all of its programs. Thus, applicants need to apply well before the deadlines, and international applicants should allow enough time for visa-related processes. If you meet the university’s eligibility requirements and have submitted the application before the deadline, you have a high chance of being accepted. Apart from this, the entrance test and interview process play a major role in strengthening your place at the university.

 

How many Indian/international students are studying at the university?

 

In 2015, the university enrolled a total of 6,157 students across in its seven schools, including 10% international students. In the same year, about 18,191 students graduated from the university, including 7,481 female and 10,710 graduates.

 

Part-Time Work While Studying

 

Can I work while studying here?

 

No. You are not allowed to work part-time of full-time with a student visa status. Student visas are issued to students pursuing their academic and non-academic courses in Nepal. To gain any type of employment in Nepal, you need to apply for a work permit separately which cannot be on your student's visa.

How many colleges and campuses does the university have?

 

The university operates out of four campuses in Dhulikhel, Patan, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur Campus. It consists of seven academic schools which are further divided into departments.

Is on-campus housing available?

 

The university provides on-campus housing accommodations to students enrolled in the School of Science, Engineering, and BBIS. It has separate hostels for males and females that offers a comfortable environment to live and study. These hotels are located on the central campus at Dhulikhel.

 

Applicants can also choose to stay off-campus with their friends or families as per their requirements. Students can check the housing webpage on the university's website for various private accommodation listings.
