Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) was established as the Athens School of Commercial Studies in 1920. Its name was changed to the Athens School of Economics and Business in 1926. It received its current name in 1989. Initially, the institution only offered one three-year degree in the field of commerce and economics. In 1955, the course duration was changed from three years to four years and led to the introduction of two separate degrees - one in business administration and the other in economics. In 1984, the institute was split into three different departments, namely the Department of Statistics and Business Informatics, Department of Economics and Department of Business Administration.
At present, the university has eight academic departments distributed across three academic schools. It is a part of numerous prestigious international organizations, including the United Nations Global Compact, the Balkan Universities Association (BUA), the European University Association (EUA) and the Higher Education and Research in Management of European Universities (HERMES). It also holds the accreditation of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). The university is Greece's third oldest higher education institution.
The AUEB campus is situated in the center of downtown Athens. Its main building is situated on Patision Street, a short distance from the Archaeological Museum. Apart from this main building, the campus consists of four more buildings situated in the same area. One of these buildings is situated on Derigny Street and the other one on Kodrigtonos Street. The university has a research center located on Kefallinias Street and a Graduate School building located on the corner of Evelpidon and Lefkados Street. The campus also consists of a huge library, hi-tech computer center, spacious classrooms and well-equipped laboratories. It is also home to a number of students clubs and organizations.
AUEB offers 8 undergraduate, 36 postgraduate degrees and several doctoral degree programs in various disciples of business and economics such as management, accounting, marketing, finance, communication, statistics, human resources, and informatics. It houses over 11,250 students, including more than 300 international students. It is also home to 240 qualified teaching staff members. The university has 33 research laboratories and 350 executive training centers. It has a committed Career Office that frequently conducts various events, workshops, counseling sessions and training seminars to enhance the students' employability and help them achieve their career goals. Also, the university has collaborations with more than 230 local and international organizations and institutions.
AUEB has numerous distinguished and successful alumni. Doukissa Nomikou is a model and TV presenter who has represented Greece at Mexico's Miss Universe pageant. George-Marios Angeletos is an accomplished economist and professor. George Zanias has formerly served as Greece's Minister of Finance. Lea Verou is a successful front end web developer and author. Eleftherios Petrounias is a professional gymnast who won a gold medal in the 2016 Olympics. Elias P. Demetracopoulos was a well-known Greek journalist. Christiana Kalogirou is an economist and a politician who is currently serving as North Aegean's Regional Governor. The university has many other notable alumni.
