Studyabroad.shiksha.com got in touch with one of the students – Ankit Raj, who got admission to Lakehead University, Canada for the course MSc in Computer Science.

Question: Why did you choose to study abroad?

Ankit Raj: While I was in Nigeria, a colleague suggested I progress to a job with Database Administrator (DBA) profile. Since this profile is really common in India, I considered working in other countries where there was a major need for DBA professionals. I consulted a few of my friends and colleagues and in the end, the conclusion was that Canada is one country where DBA profile has a lot of scope. But for that, I needed to pursue my masters there, so I knew I will have to go for Computer Science course. I have a CGPA of 8.8 for my undergraduate course so getting into a masters course seemed like a good option.

If you are good enough at your job and work for a well-established organization, you can consider getting a Permanent Residency (PR) in Canada. The chances of your PR application getting accepted in Canada is higher than many other countries in the world.

It still feels unbelievable that I got into a university of my choice because the competition for admission was so tough. I wasn’t sure if my application will get accepted anywhere so initially I had my doubts about applying to any university abroad. It was my Shiksha counselor who convinced me to give it a shot. I had just come back to India after leaving my job in Nigeria and I was only playing with the idea of applying to universities abroad. So the credit goes to the counselor who gave me the confidence to apply.

Q: How did you research the application process?

AR: One of my school friends had recently joined the University of Wisconsin. While discussing future career plans, she told me that you can’t achieve much if you don’t have a specialized masters degree. I asked her about the whole process of applying to universities abroad and she guided me through the complete procedure. I hadn’t zeroed on Canada back then and was open to exploring various options.

Q: What was the most difficult stage of applying to universities abroad?

AR: I feel the most difficult part of applying to universities abroad was creating the Statement of purpose, Essays, and Letters of Recommendations. It was a new concept for me and I didn’t have a great understanding initially. The challenge was that I had never had to present myself through a written document; putting to words all my aspirations, ambitions etc. was not easy for me. The editors at Shiksha helped me edit these documents and gave me valuable feedback.

Q: How did you prepare for the GRE and TOEFL exams? What were your scores?

AR: My school friend had told me about the GRE exam, as the scores are required at universities in US for MS courses.

I prepared for GRE within two weeks. My friends who had already given the exam provided me with the study material. So I studied on my own with the help of books and relevant software. Thanks to all those resources I scored 296 on the GRE.

I had to take my TOEFL exam twice as I wasn’t happy with my scores the first time. The day my results for the first attempt came out, I registered myself to re-take the exam in the next 15 days. The second time, I scored 96 in TOEFL and that is the score I submitted with my application.

Q: How did you come across Shiksha study abroad counseling services? What are your honest opinions about the help provided to you by the team?

AR: After I gave my GRE and TOEFL exams, I registered with the Shiksha study abroad counseling.

My first thoughts when I was contacted by the Shiksha counselor were about the cost. I thought their services will cost me a lot and I wasn’t keen on spending any money. As I mentioned earlier, I wasn’t very confident about getting admitted to a university abroad. Once the counselor told me that Shiksha doesn’t charge anything for their services, I considered taking their help and gave the whole process a shot.

My counselor helped me out even on weekends. Whenever I had a doubt or a question, I would
WhatsApp or e-mail her and would get an instant reply. I actually preferred interactions over text messages and e-mails than face-to-face interactions as I saved a lot of time and money this way.

The best thing about the Shiksha counselors is that if they aren’t sure of some information they are open about it. If I asked my counselor about something and she wasn’t aware of it, she always told me that she will get back to me after researching properly. She didn’t give me incorrect information at any point.

Q: Do you have any advice for prospective international students?

AR: My advice would be to research everything about studying abroad thoroughly. Whether it is choosing universities or the application process you need to understand it really well. Also, I’d say it doesn’t hurt to hire the services of a counselor as doing this will definitely make your application appear more professionally crafted. I realize it now that I couldn’t have made it to the University of my choice without the help I received from Shiksha.

Ankit is now going to begin his college session in Canada. Studyabroad.Shiksha.com wishes him a prosperous career.
