Why Canada is a good choice for Computer Engineering: Abhi Patel
I completed my bachelor’s in Computer Engineering from LDRP-ITR this April. Along with my studies, I had done an internship in Android development at a local company in Ahmedabad during my last year of college.
Reasons to study abroad
I chose Computer engineering as my career because of the scope it has abroad. Although I was confused between choosing USA and Canada for my studies, I finally decided to go for the latter option. Canada also has great Universities to study and we get field jobs thereafter. One of the main reasons to opt to study in Canada is that one can get PR easily after studies depending on one's credit score. Moreover, the tuition fees of Canadian universities is much less as compared to those of US colleges.
Choosing a course and college
Being a computer engineering student, I had a choice of going for the MACS (Co-op) program or an MCS (Thesis based) program. As I wanted to pursue a PhD after my Master’s degree, MCS was an obvious choice. After getting admits from 4 universities, I chose Dalhousie University as it provided specialization in Big Data which is a blooming concept in the field of Computer Science.

Challenging part of the Application process
The whole application process from University selection to filing for the visas is a tiresome process. Hence, most of the students join consultancies for the same reason. It was during this tough time when I came across Shiksha website. I mailed them regarding some doubts I had about the application process which were answered satisfyingly by a brilliant member of the Shiksha counselling community (Anamika Saxena). Then after I used to call her whenever I had a dilemma and completed the whole process under her guidance.
The Canadian Visa process can be done online that just includes uploading of the required documents, which saves us from going to Visa offices and the visa interview process.

Dealing with Expenses
The tuition fees of my universities for my entire course of 2 years adds up to about Rs 16 lakhs. Apart from that, the living expenses cost around Rs 10 lakhs, plus or minus depending on your lifestyle. Opting for GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate) is a good choice while studying in Canadian universities and colleges. My father provided all the funding necessary for my stay in Canada and so I didn’t have to take any loan for the same. I am hoping for a scholarship or resources which I am going to need for my research in the next term, from the University itself.
