This course in Mental Health Nursing leads to registration as a Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI). - Mental Health nursing is a specialist field within the health care profession. Over the course of this four-year honours degree course, students will develop the professional knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to meet the nursing needs of individuals experiencing a range of mental health feelings, problems and conflicts.
- The nurse is concerned with helping to restore and maintain mental health and has an educational role in the promotion of recovery and the reduction/prevention of mental health distress.
The primary objective of mental health nursing is to facilitate the maximum development of the mental health of the individual who has mental health problems and to promote mental health in the wider community - At the heart of the role of the mental health nurse is the ability to establish therapeutic relationships with individuals and their families. Good communication skills are essential to form and maintain these relationships.
