New Zealand International Student Enrolments Stood Above 59,000 for the First Eight Months of 2023
The universities and schools in New Zealand remain the two largest subsectors for international students, according to the official statement.
New Zealand, known for its world-class education system, continues to attract international students from all corners of the globe. The country is growing its popularity among international study-abroad aspirants. The popularity is also reflected in government data released by the Minister for Tertiary Education and Skills, Hon Penny Simmonds.
Minister Simmonds's data revealed that the international student enrolments with the New Zealand education providers for the first eight months of 2023 stood at 59,306, which is up by 43% as compared to the full year in 2022. The data is of the enrolments from January to August 2023.
The government's release said that final enrolment numbers for 2023 will be available shortly. It also added that schools and universities in New Zealand are the two largest subsectors for international students.

Minister Simmonds said, “Over 59,000 enrolments, in just eight months, confirms that international students continue to find New Zealand an attractive education destination. And for the university sector with 27,535 students enrolled, where a proportion of learners may study for a number of years, there is a solid base of students from which to grow.”
New Zealand International Student Enrolments Details
The data added that the foreign student enrolments in New Zealand have increased in all subsectors except wānanga. The greatest percentage increase was witnessed in the English Language Schools, where enrolments jumped by a massive 347% from 1,565 in 2022 to 7,001 in the year 2023. The second subsector that shows growth is schools which reported an increase of 114% from 5,925 enrolments in 2022 to 12,662 enrolments in 2023.
Te Pūkenga had 4,955 enrolments in 2022 and a total of 6,560 in the year 2023, an increase of 32%. Universities witnessed an increase of 15% from 24,040 to 27,535 between 2022 and 2023. Private Training Establishments (funded and unfunded) have seen a jump of 13% from 5,000 to 5,671 between 2022 and 2023.
Minister Simmonds's data also revealed that among all the source markets for international students in New Zealand, the top five countries included in the total enrolment data for the said period are - China which contributed to 36% of enrolments, with India and Japan each contributing 10% and South Korea (5%), and Thailand (4%).
