Northumbria In Top 10 Most Sustainable Universities In UK

In People & Planet’s University League for 2024/25, Northumbria University is ranked 10th in the environmental and ethical performance category.

This is an annual ranking and Northumbria University has been positioned at 10 position among 150 universities across the UK. The university climbed 14 places to reach this position as compared to last year.

Dr Paul Steadman, Sustainability Manager, commented, “The Voluntary Living Wage accreditation helped push us to our rank as 10thin the UK this year, along with key carbon reduction projects on our North East campuses and our new Sustainable Travel Plan. The People & Planet University League is increasingly competitive as the drive to greater sustainability continues across the sector, so it’s rewarding to see Northumbria not only maintain our First-Class status, but also climb the rankings for 2024/25. Our work in this area is only going to continue to grow, with ongoing work in a range of key areas as well as the development of a new Biodiversity Action Plan. We look forward to seeing the effect of another year of hard work can have on our environmental impact in 2025.”

Northumbria University Gets £3m Funding To Evaluate Health And Social Care Improvements

National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) has granted Northumbria University funding of £3m to evaluate health and social care improvements.

Professor Sonia Dalkin, Co-Director of the IDEAS National Evaluation Team at Northumbria University, said, “We’re delighted to have secured funding from NIHR to drive our work in this area forwards. We have an in-depth, practical understanding of the challenges faced by our health and social care services. Our team is already embedded within the existing regional and national health and care research infrastructures with many of us previously having worked across the sector. We have well established links to regional and national UK policy makers, health and care systems in the regional and devolved nations as well as connections to services, participants, and other stakeholders within those nations. We also have access to regional and national routine health service data, and research support and delivery infrastructure, to support our evaluations."

Professor Angela Bate, Co-Director of the IDEAS National Evaluation Team, added, “By bringing together experts in different fields, with a wealth of knowledge of these systems and services, we will be able to develop findings that can inform decision making around both practice and policy that will lead to health and care service advances, improved cultures and deeper collaboration across the sectors. This will also allow for further innovation in the methods used in health and social care evaluation."
