Study in UK: Athena Swan Silver Award recognizes the Queen Mary's Institute Of Dentistry's achievements in gender equality.
Athena Swan Charter has awarded Queen Mary's Institute Of Dentistry with the Athena Swan Silver award to honour its commitment and achievements in gender equality. The Charter is a framework which works globally for gender equality within higher education (HE) and research.
Professor Aylin Baysan, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Lead and Professor of Cariology in relation to Minimally Invasive Dentistry (MID), said, “This award is a testament to the hard work and commitment of our team in creating a more inclusive and equitable environment at the Institute of Dentistry. We are proud of the progress we have made and recognise that this is an ongoing journey. Therefore, we remain committed to taking meaningful action to ensure that every individual feels valued, supported, and empowered to thrive. Through continuous reflection, collaboration, and tangible initiatives, we strive to create an environment where diversity is celebrated, equity is prioritised, and everyone has the opportunity to flourish.”
Christopher Tredwin, Dean and Institute Director and Professor of Restorative Dentistry, added, “The renewal of the Athena Swan award shows the long-term commitment of the Institute of Dentistry to embedding equality and diversity into everything we do. Many thanks to Professor Aylin Baysan and the other members of the Self Assessment Team, and to the Athena Swan Manager for the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Laura Simpson, for all their hard work.”
Faculty Of Medicine And Dentistry Gets New Dean - Professor Ian Curran
Professor Curran has been appointed as the new dean of the Faculty Of Medicine And Dentistry at Queen Mary. He is trained in anaesthesia and has held many senior clinical and academic positions in the UK and other countries.
While commenting on his appointment Professor Ian Curran said, “I am very pleased to be rejoining Queen Mary and look forward to working with colleagues and health partners to promote the highest standards of education, professional practice and leadership across our academic health system. With our exceptional partners, Faculty and staff, I am keen to champion innovative educational programmes, promote excellent student experience, and support transformative patient care.”
Professor Sir Mark Caulfield, Vice Principal for Health for Queen Mary’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, said, “I am delighted that Ian will be joining our Faculty as our new Dean for Education and lead our efforts to continue delivering excellent education for future generations of doctors, dentists, and medical professionals. I would also like to offer my thanks to our outgoing Dean, Professor Anthony Warrens for his work, particularly in relation to the establishment and continued success of our Medical campus in Malta.”
