The Royal Society Of NSW awards’ purpose is to advance knowledge and understanding within disciplines of art, science, philosophy and literature.

UNSW researchers have received the Royal Society Of NSW Awards. Out of the seven awards granted to UNSW academics, three were the most prestigious medals by the Society.

UNSW Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Attila Brungs commented, “The annual Royal Society of NSW Awards are among the oldest and most prestigious in Australia, and it’s an honour for so many of our researchers to be recognized. We are extremely proud of our UNSW academics and the real-world impact their work is having on the community. Each accolade is a testament to their dedication, passion and excellence.”

Royal Society Of NSW Awards: More Details

The Society’s highest honour, the Scientia Professor George Paxinos was given to James Cook Medal from UNSW. Others who were also recognized included Professor Katherine Boydell, Professor Jason Sharples, Professor Yansong Shen, PhD candidate Ms Linqing Tian, Scientia Professor Jane McAdam, Dr Fei Deng were also recognized.

The purpose of the award is to improve understanding and advance knowledge within the disciplines of art, science, philosophy and literature.

James Cook Medal was awarded for his lifetime contribution to human welfare and science.








On receiving the James Cook Medal, Prof. Paxinos commented,“I will use my hour in the spotlight to speak of the cognitive, motivational and emotional limits the brain places on us. My work has shown how our brains are so similar to those of chimpanzees.”







Art Work Displayed At Biggest Graduate Art Showcase

The University said that the works from the next generation of designers, artists, and makers are on display at Australia’s biggest annual 2024 art and design showcase.

Professor Edward Scheer, Head of the School of Art & Design commented, “Each year, it is my great privilege to witness the unique and remarkable creative talent that emerges from our School,” Prof. Scheer said. “The exhibition showcases the full range of innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to creative practice and research in our bachelor, honours, master’s and PhD programs. Congratulations to all our graduating students. I wish them the very best as they move forward to become the next generation of creative leaders, artists, designers and makers, both in Australia and overseas.”
