Study In Germany: Applications Open For DESY Summer Student Programme 2025

The online applications are open for the DESY Summer Student Programme 2025 to be held from July 22 to September 11, 2025.

DESY, a national research centre for fundamental science in Germany, annually invites undergraduate students in physics or other subjects including engineering and computing to offer them a research experience in their lab.

The undergraduate students can apply to the eight-week training period in one of the following fields - Elementary particle physics & accelerators, Photon science, and Astroparticle physics. The research projects can be categorized into different activity types such as experimental equipment, practical work on detectors, software development, scientific computing and theory.

Entry Requirements for DESY Summer Student Programme 2025

The students must have completed a minimum of three years of studies in physics or related disciplines in full-time mode. The large majority of projects offered in the DESY Summer Student Programme 2025 are for physics students. The programme is mainly for students who hold a bachelor's degree in physics or have enrolled in a Master's programme and those who are about to obtain their bachelor's degree.

Those students who have previously been at DESY as a summer student and those who have obtained a Master's degree or are about to obtain it by summer 2025 cannot be accepted for the programme.

"Please take note that due to regulations for paid internships in Germany, we can only accept students who are enrolled at their university for the whole period of the Summer Student Programme. Unfortunately, we cannot make exceptions to this rule since this is a necessary criteria due to German employment law," reads the official statement.

DESY Summer Student Programme 2025: More Details

The students will collaborate with expert scientists in their fields and in the independent research they get first-hand experience. The lectures will be tailored towards the central topics of the DESY research and the focus point will be the research centre. There will also be visits to the computer centre, experiments and to the accelerators. Summer students will get DESY hostel accommodation without any fees and will be expected to work for 39 hours per week. There will be financial support to help them in covering their living expenses.
