University of Melbourne at 39 Position in World by Times Higher Education

Times Higher Education has released the World University Rankings 2025. Oxford University in the UK remained at the top position while Australian universities have slipped in the rankings.

Study in Australia: University of Melbourne is ranked 39 in the world by Times Higher Education. It is Australia's top university and it dropped to 39 from 37th position earlier.

Australia's best universities have come down in the ranking which the university sector was already fearing due to changing immigration policies. THE ranks universities based on research environment, teaching, industry, research quality and international outlook.

The University of Melbourne is ranked at the top in Australia in three major global rankings including - Academic Ranking of World Universities where it ranked at 37, Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings where it ranked 13, and 39 in THE rankings.

University of Melbourne Vice-Chancellor Professor Duncan Maskell said, "These results serve as an endorsement of the ongoing commitment of the University’s staff. This latest ranking not only reflects the University’s exceptional global reputation but also underscores the remarkable contribution and dedication of all our people. Our continued success in these global rankings reflects the sustained hard work of all members of our university community over many years and for that I am profoundly grateful."

This includes our enduring commitment to investing in and prioritising our deep research collaborations and the best possible student experience for our diverse community," added Professor Duncan Maskell.







“More broadly, these latest rankings have underscored that international education is a prized national asset and as a country we should be proud to see the number of Australian universities ranked in the top 100 globally. Our universities are central to our strong Australian society and its cultural development, while playing key roles in the nation’s economic growth, international influence, and in supporting Australia's prominent position within global networks of innovation and discovery that will define Australia’s future prosperity,” Professor Duncan Maskell further added.

Australia's Universities in World University Rankings 2025: Details

Another elite university, Monash University has dropped to 58 from 54, the University of Sydney dropped one place to 61, the University of Queensland has slipped to 77 from 70th place earlier, and Australian National University dropped to 73 from 67.
