Study In US: William & Mary Introduces Two New Degrees In Critical Health Careers
William & Mary has introduced a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in human health & physiology and a B.S. or a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in public health this fall.
To meet critical demands in public health and human health, William & Mary has introduced two new degrees this fall. The students in the Department of Kinesiology in Arts & Sciences will be able to pursue a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in public health and a B.S. in human health & physiology.
Provost Peggy Agouris commented, “These new degree offerings underscore our mission to prepare students to be forward-thinking leaders. By equipping them with the tools to improve human health and advance public health initiatives, we are shaping a better future for our communities and our world.”
The public university has witnessed significant student interest in the courses related to complex health challenges.
M. Brennan Harris ’93, chair and Ken Kambis Professor of Kinesiology said, “Students are increasingly drawn to fields where they can make a tangible difference in people’s lives. These degrees will prepare them to tackle pressing health issues, from chronic disease prevention to the development of innovative public health initiatives.”
Health Care Professionals To Be In High Demand In Near Future
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projection says that careers in public health and health sciences are expected to grow significantly in the coming decade. In such growing demand, William and Mary's courses aim to prepare healthcare leaders who can address the current and emerging health challenges.
Suzanne Raitt, dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences said, “Our students graduate with a deep understanding of the science behind health, enhanced by the broader understanding and perspectives that a liberal arts education provides. These programs not only align with workforce demands but also embody our commitment to fostering an interdisciplinary education that makes a meaningful impact.”
Sarah Menefee ’03, associate chair and teaching professor of kinesiology said, “W&M students are our future health leaders. We are excited to see how our students will use their education to improve health outcomes and promote health equity. This new curriculum reflects the current departmental offerings, highlighting the strong preparation students have to solve complex health problems.”
William & Mary New Health Care Degree To Be Valuable For International Students
B.S. in human health & physiology be of value for international students as it is listed in the STEM programs in the federal Classification of Instructional Programs. Under this program, foreign students will be able to request an extended two-year visa following graduation.
B.S. in human health & physiology curriculum will comprise the physiological and biological foundations of health and will offer students hands-on experiences in areas including physiology, anatomy, biomechanics, exercise physiology, and health assessment.
