University Of Wollongong Secures Projects Under Govt's National Industry PhD Program
Study in Australia: A research partnership between the University Of Wollongong and the state government will develop a blueprint to help the government understand the threats to coastal environments.
The National Industry PhD Program of the Australian government aims to support PhD students to be equipped with skills and knowledge to translate university research into feasible industry outcomes and help them undertake industry-focused research projects.
The Federal Government’s National Industry PhD Program is funding three projects of the University of Wollongong (UOW). One of these projects is going to work on the threats to the coastal environments which include extreme storms, rising sea levels, and increased erosion. The UOW project will help the local government to understand these threats and improve coastal management.
National Industry PhD Program intends to bring together trained researchers to resolve issues around food production, agriculture, environmental sustainability, medical research, AI and manufacturing.
Professor Kerrylee Rogers from UOW’s School of Earth, Atmospheric and Life Sciences will collaborate with Senior Scientist and UOW alumni, Thomas Doyle from the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water Biodiversity, Conservation and Science Group.
Through this partnership, the scientists aim to find a new approach to predict the movement, volume and distribution of sediment on the NSW coast.
"To manage the significant hazards of sea-level rise, extreme storms, and coastal erosion, local governments must develop reliable coastal management plans that inform coastal actions and decisions. The project will enable local governments to project the effects of coastal hazards, in Australia and globally, improving coastal management at a time when coasts are dynamic because of climate change," reads the official statement.
University Of Wollongong Gets New Ancors Southeast Asia Maritime Institute
Senator the Hon Penny Wong, Australia's Minister for Foreign Affairs introduced the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS) Southeast Asia Maritime Institute at Malaysia’s Glenmarie campus of the University of Wollongong in Shah Alam.
ANCORS Director Distinguished Professor Stuart Kaye commented, “The ANCORS Southeast Asia Maritime Institute will leverage UOW’s global expertise in maritime policy. The programs will provide insights into legal frameworks governing international waters and maritime zones. Addressing issues such as piracy, illegal fishing and maritime boundary disputes and promoting sustainable use and conservation of marine ecosystems.”
“Our Graduate Certificate program is designed for flexibility and growth. Students can seamlessly progress into a Master’s degree by completing an additional four subjects, delivered in intensive, online, or traditional semester modes. The program also supports opportunities for DFAT-sponsored PhD pathways, building on ANCORS’ proven capacity to host doctoral students from Australia and around the globe,” Professor Kaye said.
UOW Vice-Chancellor and President Professor John Dewar AO said, “We are proud to be working with the Australian Government and partners in the region to deliver this impactful initiative, which is a testament to the University’s reputation in ocean law, maritime security, and marine resource management,” Professor Dewar said.
