The university offers over 371 graduate and undergraduate degree programmes along with 400 doctoral degrees. Most of the courses offered to international students are taught in English.

Application & Tuition Fees

Is there any application fees?

There is no application fee for applying to any programme at Norwegian University of Science and Technology as a national or international student.

What is the fee structure of different courses available at the university?

The university does not charge any tuition fees to international students. Education at NTNU is free of cost. However, students are required to cover their living expenses. Students are also required to document enough funds in the bank account to live in Norway.

Scholarships & Financial Aid

Is there any scholarship or financial aid available for international students?

Since the university does not charge tuition fees, NTNU does not offer any awards and scholarships to Indian or international students. Students can explore or check for external funding to cover their living expenses if required.

However, the university provides assistantships to graduate students to assist them financially. Students can work on-campus as Teaching Assistants or Research Assistants based on their interests. What are the steps to the application process?

International students can apply to any programme online via the Søknadsweb portal. The step-by-step process to apply at NTNU is as follows:

Step 1: Visit fsweb.no/soknadsweb/login.jsf.

Step 2: Click on “Login International Applicant”. New students are required to create an account.

Step 3: Answer the required questions related to citizenship, English proficiency tests, and other general admission-related questions.

Step 4: Register the international application for admission. Fill in your personal information, citizenship details, demographic details, contact details, postal address, educational background, and upload all the documents and other required information.

Step 5: After filling in all the required information for admission, review and submit the application.

Next, wait for the results.

When will I hear from the university after I submit my application?

International students will receive a decision within a few weeks after submitting the application. As all the applications are assessed individually, it might take some time to receive a decision. Students may check their application status on the admission portal. If there is any error or missing information in the application, the university will contact the students.

Admission at NTNU is highly competitive. Because education here is delivered free of cost, the university receives thousands of applications for limited seats.

Evaluation

All the applications are assessed individually. The university converts GPAs from other countries and assesses the applications. Applicants are ranked based on their assessments. Students are required to have outstanding skills and scores to secure a seat at the university. Some students might have to submit their work portfolios or essays for admission purposes. It is not easy to get into this university.

As of 2019-2020, NTNU has a total of 42,379 registered students enrolled in its various undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate courses. Out of the total students, approximately half of them study Natural Sciences and Technology and 4,624 are registered in either further education programmes, experience-based masters or ICT courses.

Part Time Work While Studying

Can I work while studying here?

International students are allowed to work on or off-campus. Students are required to have a valid work permit to work in Norway. The work areas and job opportunities include research and teaching posts for doctorate and master's students. Students can work part-time for a maximum of 20 hours a week during a semester. During vacations, students can work for 40 hours a week. Students are required to get permission from the university to work while studying.

Students can also work off-campus according to their interests and time constraints. Students can search for jobs in newspapers, magazines, job portals such as LinkedIn, etc. Apart from these avenues, students can contact their study departments to find vacancies matching their interests.

All international students are advised to check the conditions of working in a foreign country on their study visa. They are also advised to confirm any specific instructions on the same from their respective departments and faculties. Under no circumstances should they be found compromising with the law and order of the country.

Is on-campus housing available? How much does it cost?

Yes, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology offers both on and off-campus housing facilities to its students. Majority of the international students enrolled in master’s programmes receive guaranteed student housing.

Conditions

During the Spring Semester, all students are allocated housing accommodation. But during the Autumn Semester, some new students are required to find private housing. Interested students are required to submit the housing application before April and October as per the intake semester.

Accommodation Cost

The residence halls include Steinman, Moholt, etc. with cheapest rooms starting at NOK 3,400. Students are required to pay NOK 5,000 to reserve a room in the student village.

Private Housing

The university also provides private housing facilities to students who were not allocated student housing. Students can find a place near the university. The university has listed some private accommodation websites that students can use to find housing. Other than that, students can also live with their friends or family, if any, as per their requirements.

Please note that you must run a security check on any off-campus accommodation you choose. Also, you must prepare for the additional charges and facilities offered in off-campus housing. Since accommodations are offered on a contractual basis, it is recommended to do a thorough check before investing a huge amount in an unknown place.
