How to Write a Statement of Purpose (SOP) for UG Courses

Writing a Statement of Purpose for undergraduate (UG) admissions to universities abroad is a rather challenging task. What makes it more challenging for undergraduate applicants is the dearth of material to write about. While there are many aspects that a student applying for a Master’s program can include, or for that matter an MBA applicant can include, in his/her SOP, the student applying for a UG course finds it difficult to do so. For them, there might not be any professional experiences. Neither everyone would have travelled the world, nor would they have a long list of extracurricular activities. As such, how to write the SOP for a UG course becomes a tough exercise.

For the purpose of writing a Statement of Purpose for undergraduate applications, applicants need to share all their relevant experiences, interests and motivations, since they mostly have limited achievements and real-world expertise/exposure to talk about. The admissions committee (Ad Com) too understands this plight of UG applicants, and they too are not necessarily looking for a concrete professional. 6. How and where do you want to apply the knowledge and exposure gained from the program?
7. Considering your backgrounds and interests, how do you feel that you can contribute to the university/ program?
8. What are your reasons for wanting to study at that particular college or university?
9. How can studying the program help you academically/professionally?
10. Beyond studies, what are your extracurricular/ community involvements/ achievements?
11. What additional learning or interests have you pursued?
12. Any circumstances/setbacks/challenges that have had a profound impact on you, or made you want to pursue the program?
13. Since there are so many aspirants applying, what sets you apart from the rest of them?
14. How will the UG program help you achieve/take you closer to your desired goals?

Before you include anything in your UG SOP, ask yourself the following questions first:

Is it relevant to the program?

There could be many experiences that you wish to mention in your SOP. However, mentioning things that are irrelevant can have a detrimental impact on your application. Additionally, since a Statement of Purpose for undergraduate applicants may come with a word limit, mentioning less-relevant instances can take up unnecessary space, preventing you from elaborating on the crucial experiences.

Does it align with the course/theme of the program?

SOPs are formal documents; as young adults, UG aspirants have to create an impression that they are independent, motivated, focused and ambitious. Thus, before mentioning about any achievements or experiences, do consider how well they align with the program. For instance, if you are applying for a Computer Science program, it is wise to mention about all the programming languages learned, additional courses completed and relevant exposure gained.

What kind of an impression does it create/ make about me?

The initial impression that you leave about yourself often determines the fate of your application. Hence, it is critical to intrigue/hook readers within the first few paragraphs of the SOP, and keep their interest growing as they read on. 

Will it help my application?

The SOP is not a brag-sheet but a reflection of your interests, accolades and aspirations. As such, before you mention any experience, do consider if adding it would actually help your application and help the Ad Com make a decision in your favour.

SOP for Undergraduate Courses

To start off, there are many things a student applying for UG courses can include in the SOP. Here is a look at the 5 basic steps of writing the Statement of Purpose for undergraduate program.

Step 1: Prepare a list of important achievements of your school life.

At the UG level, what you have to offer is not 3 years of work experience or 4–5 years of your college life. Instead, all you have is about 12 full years of your growth. Your journey has been long and hence you have so much more to include. Think about the past 12 years, imagine the smallest joys and the greatest teachers; think about the stresses and the joyous victories. It could be your win at the State Level Volleyball Tournament or the first win in an intra-class debate competition in your V standard. Whatever it might be, you have a long history of 12 years to rack up. So, think about all the instances and if you still remember them, there is a good reason to include them in your list.

Step 2: Do not look for a theme – just think about your life’s journey so far.

Contrary to the 5 basics of how to write an SOP, this is one step that is completely invalidated. At this juncture, we suggest not to think of a theme other than your life’s story. This is, in true terms the platform where you would be able to talk about what you have done and how you came to this decision. You are still exploring, deciphering, and yearning to learn. As you have so much to mention, do not go just searching for leadership instances or any specific characteristic. You are still mouldable, be flexible in your SOP and do not pick a particular instance.

Step 3: Prepare your first draft.

At the UG stage, we pull this step forth and ask you to start writing it down. This is important even before you start cutting your lists. We suggest that you prepare a draft early on, even before you get a chance to think about what you wish to include.

Step 4: Discuss your lists and the first draft.

Discussing with friends, families, and if you share that rapport, with your teachers is a great way to start pruning your list. Find out what they think of your draft, which incident they would rather have you remove and what they think you should talk about. Ask for help for your drafts’ to be critiqued and questioned. Remember, they would be able to look at your achievements from an outsider’s perspective and find something more amusing than others.

Step 5: Finalize your SOP.

Once you have discussed the draft and the lists, it is now time to finalize your Statement of Purpose for undergraduate degree. We always recommend writing a piece. Once you have completed the same, simply write the statement of purpose again. Be very clear about your goal. Keep in mind what you want to include in your SOP for the UG course. Once you have written the draft, edit the document in order to remove grammatical and typographical errors. There is no finite number of times you might have to write and re-write your SOP.
