Stockholm University Admission Process 2024
Stockholm University is spread out across several campuses over a vast region with its primary campus in Frescati. At Stockholm University, education and research are carried out in 53 departments, centers, and institutes that report directly to the Boards of Human Science or the Faculty Boards.
Within the university, centers, institutes, and field stations are organizationally affiliated with a specific institution. These units frequently work in integrative research settings involving several institutions, third parties, and topics. However, they can also function as specialized research institutes.
The Centre for the Advancement of University Teaching (CeUL) at Stockholm University aims to promote engaging, high-quality teaching at all levels. They assist the faculty and departments in developing courses and creating learning environments that encourage and enhance student learning greatly.
Courses Offered
What are the courses available to international students?
With English as the medium of teaching, Stockholm University offers single courses, 3 bachelors and 75 master’s programs. It provides 300 Science and Human Science programs and 1,700 courses.
Stockholm teaches the following majors through three of its departments:
Apart from these, some of the preferred majors among the international population are Computers, Business, Language, Media and Communication, etc. Such courses are available in the sub-departments under the aforementioned department names.
Eligibility & Documents Required
What are the eligibility requirements?
The eligibility requirements for Indian aspirants applying to different courses at Stockholm University are described programme-wise below:
Indian Undergraduate (Bachelor) Eligibility —
A passing grade in Mathematics is necessary to fulfil the general admission criteria for bachelor’s courses if you graduated after 2009. You must additionally submit your Secondary School Certificate if you do not have a passing mark in Mathematics on your Higher Secondary Certificate or Proficiency Certificate (SSC).
With your upper secondary education, you can fulfil the English language requirement by taking one of the following courses:
- Grades in English and at least three other subjects with English as the language of instruction stated on your official upper secondary certificate
- Grades in English issued by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE)
- Grades in English issued by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) from 2008 onwards
Students with a Bachelor's degree (equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen) in Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Applications, Medicine, Pharmacy, Natural Sciences, or Technology must meet the English requirement unless documented that the language of instruction for the programme was a language other than English.
For courses and study programmes at the bachelor's level, the English language general entry requirement is equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.
Indian Graduate (Masters) Eligibility —
A 4-year bachelor’s degree or a bachelor’s degree followed by a master’s degree is the minimal prerequisite for admission to a master’s program (4 years of study in all). Some study programs need a relevant bachelor's degree as a prerequisite.
Applicants holding a three-year bachelor's degree with honours in specific social science or humanities will also be considered.
The entrance criteria for a master's program are not met by students who merely hold a 3-year Bachelor's without honours. A postgraduate degree is not considered, and it does not fulfil the requirements of a Swedish candidate test.
Under the admission criteria for a master's program, the following degrees are not considered:
- A (BA) from India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery
- A (BA) from India, Sri Lanka, or Bangladesh Unani Medicine and Surgery
The criteria also require an equivalent of English 6 for most master's courses and programs. However, a few may need more minors in more languages.
English Requirements for International Students —
International students coming from non-English-speaking countries, such as India, need to prove their language proficiency through IELTS Exam score of overall 6.5 bands with no section below 5.5 bands.

What are the documents needed for the application?
Indian applicants must submit the following set of documents for admissions at Stockholm University:
Undergraduate Educational Documents
- Higher Secondary Certificate
- Intermediate Certificate of Examination
- Senior School Certificate in India
- Certificate of Pre-University Education
- Diploma from an Indian School (ISC)
- Certificate of Vocational Education certifying CVE completion
- Certificate of Examination for Polytechnic Diploma/Diploma
Graduate Educational Documents
- Academic transcripts of credentials already completed (covered above plus proof of bachelors and masters completion)
- Research proposal (if applicable)
Note: Students must submit a copy of their high secondary examination certificate with a statement of marks from the board (the university does not accept certificates issued by schools).
Common Documents
Some common documents are required for admission to both graduate and undergraduate courses. These are:
- You must submit an essay on "Why would you like to study in Sweden?"
- A copy of the valid passport and two passport-sized pictures
- Evidence of financial assistance in the form of a bank statement and letter of support
- Proof of proficiency in English
- Evidence of adequate insurance

Application & Tuition Fees
Is there any application fee?
For your application to be processed, you must pay the application fee of SEK 900 (Swedish coroner), a non-refundable fee, before the specified date. Any funds received after the deadline will affect application processing. Late requests are considered at the university’s discretion only if seats are available.
What is the fee structure of the courses offered by the university?
The tuition fee charged per annum from international students for different programmes offered at Stockholm University are as follows:

Scholarships & Financial Aid
Is there a scholarship or financial aid available for international students?
Yes, there are a few scholarships offered to international students at Stockholm. Each one has its own eligibility criteria.
International Scholarship
The University of Stockholm has a specific scholarship for dedicated for international students. To qualify for the bursary, a student must be:
- Backed with academic merits
- Accepted to the first (international) entrance round for the master’s program at Stockholm University
- A citizen from a state outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland and must pay study fees
Stockholm University Scholarship Scheme
This scheme aims at specially-qualified national and international students enrolled in master’s programme, for whom it covers the cost of entire tuition fee. International students would need is to cover all the other expenses, besides their tuition fee.

Scholarship – Eligibility, Process, Deadline, and Result
Among all the selected master’s students, the qualifying ones receive an electronic application form via email to apply to this scholarship at universityadmissions.se. Students get the application form in early April each year and they are required to fill it within a week’s time. Results of this scholarship are announced by the end of April each year.

Admission Process
When do the admissions start?
International students may apply to Stockholm University in either of the two intakes:
Admissions at Stockholm occur in two rounds for both the semesters.
1. First Round
All foreign applicants are welcomed in the first round of admission. This round is held many months before the beginning of a semester. It gives students the time to pay tuition fees, apply for and acquire residence permits (if necessary), and arrange accommodation.
2. Second Round
The second rounds in both semesters are suitable for applicants who do not need to apply for a study visa. The application window is small in the second round which does not allow the time required for visa preparation. Also, only a few of the courses are offered in the second round of admission.
Admission Windows —
Refer to the admissions windows for all courses/programs given below:
- Fall Semester: The first admission round opens between mid-October and mid-January. In the month of April, the second round is open.
- Spring Semester: The first admission round is available from early June through mid-August. The second round of admission is open from mid-September until mid-October.
What are the steps to the application process?
International students for all courses may apply to Stockholm University online through its application portal. Refer to the application steps given below:
Step 1: Visit eduid.se/en/ and create a new EDUID with an active email address.
Step 2: A confirmation email will be sent to the registered email address. Use it to confirm the email address.
Step 3: Fill out the necessary documentation details and save them. Then through the My Selection option, go to courses and programmes.
Step 4: Choose the programme as graduate or undergraduate and select the intended course.
Step 5: Apply for the course through the ‘My Selection’ option.
Step 6: Input and verify the necessary details and complete all the sections.
Step 7: Pay the confirmation fee after reviewing the application and submit the form.
Next, wait for the results.
