Established in 1930, Donetsk National Medical University was initially known as M. Gorky Donetsk National Medical University. It is a medical institution that is considered to be the largest university in Ukraine. This higher education institution received the status of a university in 1994. Later on, in 2008, it got the status of the National Medical University. The university began its first full-time program classes with 207 students. By 1936, a total of 836 applications were submitted for admission and the number of enrolments increased at rapid growth. The research faculty has published over 100 journals related to science. In 1939, the medical-prophylactic faculty was developed and in 1940, the institute opened the pediatric and sanitary-hygienic faculties.
The university campus comprises nine student hostels, 13 academic buildings, 37 computer laboratories, reading halls, a sports room, a health center, and several libraries. The students are provided with all the required facilities at the campus. The central library consists of thousands of books, journals, magazines and research papers. The students can also access the electronic resources available at the library. A total of 8 faculties are developed at the campus, namely Paediatrics, Medicine, Pharmacy, and Dentistry, Public health, Nursing, Preparatory Department and Postgraduate education. Moreover, the campus features 28 well-equipped clinical bases. The students can take part in training for specialization within the campus. They experience a calm learning environment at the campus.
The university offers postgraduate programs, doctoral-level programs, and various specialization programs. The students are taught under experienced faculty members. They also get a chance to take part in the student exchange programs. They are also given professional training within the campus. Many professionals visit the University Guest Lectures, practical workshops and interactive sessions. The students are taken for industrial visits to learn about the fieldwork. The institute houses the Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedics which was developed in 1956. It majorly focuses on the field of orthopedics, prosthetics, and traumatology. It also conducts experimental researches to improve public health. All the experiments are done under professional guidance. This gives students a wide scope to learn and work under professionals.
