University of Amsterdam History
In 1632, Gerardus Vossius opened the Athenaeum Illustre, the predecessor of the University of Amsterdam. Then, in 1815, the Athenaeum Illustre was officially recognized as an institution of higher education. In 1877 the municipality of Amsterdam was allowed to promote the Athenaeum Illustre to the status of a university. Over the years the University of Amsterdam expanded by introducing new faculties, and subjects. The university also added specialisms between 1917 and 1931 and witnessed an increase in students from 1100 to 2500. The University of Amsterdam was recognized as the largest university with over 7100 students in 1950-1951 after WWII. The university’s status as a municipal university came to an end in 1961 and the university started receiving its funds from the national government.

University of Amsterdam Campus Life
To enjoy the campus life, students can access the University Sports Center (USC). This center offers a wide range of sports from Fitness to Martial Arts, team sports, and dance classes. In total, 70+ courses are presented. Also, students can also take part in the creative workshops.
Campus Life
There are four campuses of the University of Amsterdam. These are City Centre Campus, Roeterseiland Campus, Amsterdam Science Park Campus, Amsterdam UMC.
- City Centre Campus: This campus houses the Faculty and Humanities and the University Library
- Roeterseiland Campus: This campus is the place for Economics and Business, the Amsterdam Business School, the Social and Behavioral Sciences and student cultural centre CREA. The Faculty of Law is also situated here
- Amsterdam Science Park Campus: This campus is the home to Faculty of Science, the brand-new University Sports Centre and the Amsterdam University College
- Amsterdam UMC: This campus joins together the university teaching hospitals of the UvA (AMC) and the VU University (VUmc)
