Established in 1946, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte is a large public university located in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA. History
The history of UNC Charlotte goes back to the year 1946 when Charlotte Center was opened, offering classes to students in the facilities of Charlotte’s Central High School. After 3 years, the state closed the centers. The Charlotte Center was taken over by the city school district and operated as Charlotte College, offering the first two years of college courses. In 1961, Charlotte College moved its growing student body into two new buildings on what was to become a 1,000-acre campus. Three years later, the North Carolina General Assembly approved bills making Charlotte College, a 4-year state-supported institution. In 1965, the legislature approved bills creating UNCC, the fourth campus of the statewide university system. At present, the university is growing exponentially. As of July 2024, the university boasted more than 178,000 alumni.
