Alabama Southern Community College (ASC) was formed in 1991 after President Harry S Truman, called for the formation of Public Community Colleges for the higher education of the local communities. It is the only community college in Monroe County. The fundamental purpose of the college is to uplift students in the area of education, and develop a skilled workforce in the state. The college offers a bachelor's degree with a specialization in seven fields which is a blend of engineering and business courses.
ASC College focuses on imparting knowledge with an emphasis on application to nurture workforce knowledge and make their students job-ready. The courses offered in Associate Degree in Applied Technology are Machine Technology and Construction Electricity, Associate Degree in Applied Science in Electrical & Instrumentation Technology, Business Technology, Industrial Maintenance Technology, and Paper and Chemical Technology. TOEFL scores are accepted for admissions.
There is an enrolment of approximately 1400 students of which 900 students are in full-time courses and 600 are in part-time courses. The student-teacher ratio maintained by ASC College is 1 teacher for 26 students which is healthier as compared to the other community colleges that follow a ratio of 1 teacher for 28 students. The college supports students by providing financial aid and almost 89% of the students are offered monetary help to continue studies.
The Monroeville campus supports co-curricular activities and hence, has many education- and interest-based clubs. The education club has a society called the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society which acknowledges and appreciates academic achievements and provides students with fellowship programs and scholarships. The National Technical Honor Society supports students with high technical skills and encourages technical development in the respective field. The National Society of Leadership and Success helps budding leaders to grow and harness leadership skills by providing frequent training in the field of team management, people, behavioral and speaking skills. The other society is Phi Beta Lambda which is a unique setup to aid budding entrepreneurs.
The college provides relevant preparation resources and opportunities to grow. ASC College along with technical skills, also inculcates soft skills in students through Skills USA. Students also participate in sports like baseball, basketball, golf, tennis, softball and volleyball. The college has a tennis complex and fully equipped fitness centre. Students continuously participate in inter-collegiate sports, and athletic and academic competitions through Scholars' Bowl.
The college also supports and encourages students in the field of Fine Arts and has a Regional Arts Museum which offers a lot of research resources. ASC College also has a Students Government Association creates leadership positions among students who work for the betterment of the campus and student life by understanding their needs and requirements. This association also conducts community service activities in their regions.
