Bowie State University: Courses, Admission, Cost

Bowie State University was the first-ever black university of Maryland and it was set up in the year 1865. It is located in Prince George’s County, Maryland. BSU currently offers 22 undergraduate programs, 19 master's degrees, two Ph.D. programs, and 14 certificate programs in varied fields such as computer science, education, and development of human capital, corporate communication, and nursing.

In collaboration with the University of Maryland University College, it has been the first historically black university to provide overseas studies. It was also the nation's first institution to deliver a degree course in pedology. The university has an acceptance rate of 36% and currently has more than 4000 students enrolled in its various programs.

BSU maintains a healthy 16:1 ratio of students and teachers which ensures that each student gets the personal attention of teachers. This also makes sure that they get quality education from well-qualified professors. The university offers financial aid to those students who need it. There are four types of financial assistance schemes: Scholarships: There is no obligation to repay scholarships. These are intended for highly qualified students, such as those with intellectual ability, participation in different fields of study, or financial need.

Grants: Grants is another kind of financial support offered by the university, and it need not be repaid. Both federal grants are awarded to financially disadvantaged students. Loans: Loans have to be paid back, with interest. There are basically three main categories: student loans, parent loans, and private loans for college. FWS: The Federal Work-Study Program is need-based and provides qualifying students with job opportunities. The FWS grant is dependent on the support and need.

The university has quite a few notable alumni like Jovan Adepo, Toni Braxton, Susie Proctor, Issac Redman, and many more.
