Commonly called JU, Jacksonville University is a private institution of higher education in Jacksonville, Florida. Founded as a 2-year college in 1934, it was earlier recognized as Jacksonville Junior College. Later, as Jacksonville University, it graduated its first 4-year degree candidates in 1959. The university is officially certified with the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
The university campus occupies 260 acres of land and is classified into three institutes and four colleges. It offers more than 100 majors, minors, and programs, including degrees in Business, Marine Science, Engineering, Physics, and Nursing, as well as those in the more contemporary and specialized fields of Aviation, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Film, Animation, and Sports Business. It has a total undergraduate enrolment of more than 2,300. The student body has students from over 40 states and about 52 nations around the world.
Jacksonville University has 21 Division I athletic teams. Nearly 1 in 4 JU students compete in an intercollegiate varsity sport. The athletic facilities include a ballpark overlooking the river, new tennis and softball complexes, plus a football, soccer, and track & field complex.
The government association of the students at the university works to fulfill the requirements of the student body. The chosen representatives are from the student organizations, housing communities, and colleges of the university. Moreover, there are several other facilities offered at the university. The student's center comprises a fitness center, game room, and other services. Students can participate in a number of extracurricular things. There are a number of clubs and organizations. Students can be a part of activities related to arts, politics, and social action, service and professional, religious, sports and recreation, academic and profession.
The university maintains special interest groups. The media organizations at the campus operate a student newspaper, called The Navigator, a campus radio station, namely JU108, and literary and arts magazine known as The Aquarian. Moreover, there is a student-run broadcasting station, called Dolphin Channel. Apart from this, the alumni base of the university is quite rich and several known people have been graduated from the university who are now contributing to various areas of the society. Some of the known alumni of the university include Aaron Bean (Florida state representative), Bertice Berry (Sociologist), Alvin Brown (ex-Mayor of Jacksonville) and Dee Brown (NBA player).
