History
The university opened its doors in 1828 as the New Paltz Classical School. The first bachelor’s degrees were awarded to the 112 members of the Class of 1942 and in 1947, the offering of graduate studies in Education started. In the year 1948, New Paltz became one of the original campuses to join the newly established State University of New York System. In the 1960s and 1970s like other SUNYs, New Platz experienced physical expansion with numerous new buildings constructed to form a modern university campus on 216 acres.
In 2021-22, the university added a fully online degree completion program, a Bachelor of Arts degree in General Studies. From its inception as the Classical School, SUNY New Paltz established a reputation for excellence and creativity in serving the educational needs of the Hudson Valley and other regions of New York State.
