Washington and Jefferson College is a private institution that was founded in 1781. It is liberal arts and sciences college located 30 miles south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Washington & Jefferson College is recognized nationally as a highly selective, residential, student-centered liberal arts college with an exceptional record of producing future leaders whose graduates are prepared for a breadth of life opportunities and professional success. Toward that end, W&J asserts its place as Pittsburgh's premier liberal arts institution, a role it has played for more than 230 years. Broadly, it is known as a robust community of engaged and intellectually curious faculty, staff, and students.

W&J values educational experiences that take the students outside of the study hall, for example, internships, experiential and service-learning, and student-faculty collaborative research that often leads to conference presentations and publications. Besides exercises directly connected to the academic programs, Washington and Jefferson College is known for the Magellan Project that furnishes students with the help and funding necessary to pursue their own designed summer research projects. The Washington Fellows Program is a specific program for excellent students who want to challenge themselves in distinctive ways during their years at the college.

Washington & Jefferson College provides a top-ranked four-year, co-ed liberal arts education. It offers 33 majors and several minors and concentrations in a variety of rewarding fields, including our internationally-recognized pre-law and pre-health programs. At W&J, students will have access to pre-professional and special programs, emphases, concentrations, and other academic opportunities. The small class sizes assure that students receive personal attention while they study, and the collaborative curriculum ensures a great college experience.

The Academic Status Committee (ASC), with the help of the Office of Academic Affairs, directs the college's program for graduation with honors in an area of study. W&J offers four tiers of merit awards: The W&J Thrive Scholarship, The Howard J. Burnett Presidential Scholarship, the W&J Scholars Award, and the Dean's Award. Annual scholarship amounts are divided equally over the fall and spring semesters and can be used to lower the overall college costs.
