Latvia Study Visa

As per the law for immigration in Latvia, international students from third countries enrolled in Latvian universities or colleges are required to apply for a long-stay visa at the diplomatic and consular representations of Latvia in the third countries. long-stay visas are valid for up to 90 days and after getting a long-stay visa and entering Latvia international students are supposed to apply for a residence permit at the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs of Latvia (OCMA).

Residence Permit

A residence permit is an official document from the government of Latvia allowing foreigners to live in the Republic of Latvia for a definite period of time (a temporary residence permit) or permanently. A residence permit is required if a foreigner wishes to stay in Latvia for more than 90 days. International students are required to apply for a residence permit within 180 days of arriving in Latvia, counting from the first day of entrance.

Post-study Work Permit in Latvia

International students coming from non-EU countries are required to have a residence permit. The residence permit by the Latvian government is issued for full-time bachelor’s students they receive a resident’s permit for the study period and an additional 4 months after the end of their studies. This additional time is offered to international students to apply for a post-graduation course in Latvia or seek a job. International students enrolled in full-time master’s and doctoral programs get a residence permit for the study period and an additional 4 months. These additional months are given to seek a job. International students enrolled in full-time master’s and doctoral courses. 







International students pusring masters and doctoral courses who have already got an additional 4 months after their graduation can extend their residence permit to 9 more months. The extension of visa to 9 more months is not guaranteed.
