There are 2 departments: on board of a ship and the non technical department head I e chief officer becomes the captain. The technical department or the engine department deals with maintenance and repair of machinery and the highest rank is chief engineer. As far as salary is concerned, both (Chief and captain) have the same salary if they hold same years of experience. However, captains are the ones who are owners/representatives who distribute the salary on board. Although captain has full control on board the ship, but a chief engineer has got better prospects ashore when dealing as a ship superintendent.
