There are two profiles in the merchant navy, engineer and cadet, first, you need to decide which profile you want to go for. Under Cadet - you must clear IMUCET conducted by Indian Maritime Institute or JEE and do your B.Sc. Nautical Science or B.Sc. Marine Science
Under Engineering - You must clear IMUCET conducted by Indian Maritime Institute or JEE and do your B.Tech (Marine Engineering). You can also do B.Sc. Nautical Science or B.Sc. Marine Science. You must also secure at least 60% in 12th PCM. Medical fitness is also required. You must also meet Eye vision requirement, 6/6 for each eye for B.Sc. And up to plus or minus 2.5 for B.Tech. Un-aided vision should be 6/12 in both eyes minimum or 6/9 in the good eye and 6/12 in the other eye. No colour blindness is allowed.

Career as a Merchant Navy could be in 2 fields mainly - Engineer or a Cadet. Other fields could be catering, junior offiecers, etc. Subjects Required :Only PCM students can apply. Entrance Exam
IMU- CET :Indian Maritime University conducts an entrance exam IMUCET for various courses such as B.Sc. Nautical Science, B.Sc. Marine, B.Sc. Marine Catering, etc. You are also required to clear an interview and medical check-up. JEE T. S. Chanakya, Marine Engineering & Research Institute, Kolkata, & National Maritime Academy, Chennai, etc. Accepts JEE score. They are required to fill the forms for IMU as well. Colleges offering B.Sc. BASIC DETAILS ABOUT Diploma IN NAUTICAL Science COURSE
It is a 1 year long Diploma course. The course trains candidates to take on the role of Navigation Officer on Merchant Navy ships. It also covers basics of Marine Technical Knowledge, Safety and Fire Prevention, Communication Skills etc. Some important subjects covered in this course are-

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum educational qualification required to pursue this course is 10+2 Science stream schooling with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects. Students should have passed 12th Board examination from a recognised Board. Minimum marks criteria may exist and is generally around 50-60% marks in Board Examination. B.Sc. Degree holders (subjects like Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) may also pursue this course. Minimum marks criteria may exist and is generally between 50-60% marks in final year of Degree programme. Engineering (B.E. /B.Tech. ). Graduates (any branch) may also pursue this course. Candidate should be Physically fit as per Merchant Shipping standards to take on sea faring role. Eyesight should be 6/6 on each eye (unaided vision). Candidate should not be suffering from color blindness or night blindness. AGE LIMIT
Candidate should not be more than 25 years of age at the time when the course starts.
