Eligibility Criteria to join merchant navy:
1- Pass 10+2 with Physics Chemistry and Maths.
2- Unmarried Indian citizen. (male or female).
3- Normal vision 6/6 is required but glasses up to plus or minus 2.5 may be allowed.
4- Admission is through an entrance exam followed by a screening test and a written exam.
5- After clearing the entrance exam, there is an interview and a medical test.
6- You also need to complete a ship-training course prior to employment. The course is generally short-term.

Career as a Merchant Navy could be in 2 fields mainly - Engineer or a Cadet. Other fields could be catering, junior offiecers, etc. Subjects Required :Only PCM students can apply. Entrance Exam
IMU- CET :Indian Maritime University conducts an entrance exam IMUCET for various courses such as B.Sc. Nautical Science, B.Sc. Marine, B.Sc. Marine Catering, etc. You are also required to clear an interview and medical check-up. JEE T. S. Chanakya, Marine Engineering & Research Institute, Kolkata, & National Maritime Academy, Chennai, etc. Accepts JEE score. They are required to fill the forms for IMU as well. Colleges offering B.Sc. Hello Vasu, I feel with the Indian economy booming, there will be great opportunities in shipping industry in years to come. Hence I feel merchant navy has much better scope.

You have a very bright chance of job opportunities after marine engineering. But I wonder why you want to do marine engineering after your mechanical engineering. If an offshore job is your priority then do merchant navy course. It is for a maximum 3-years duration only.

Shipping companies in the government and private sector provide favorable job prospect and growth along with foreign shipping lines and companies. This sector requires bright and talented freshers who can be vested with the duty of ship operation and maintenance. A fresher in merchant navy job can expect a minimum remuneration of Rs. 2.3 Lacs Rs. 3.4 Lacs. The salary increases with your growth and promotion.

Merchant Navy officers are working along ships. These sail in waters and as a result you are away from home for long periods of time. So, to compensate, many companies offer such arrangement but it's not the rule.
