The opportunity to travel around the world and the lure of adventure on the high seas, besides the possibility of high remunerations attracts many youngsters to make a career in the Merchant Navy. Merchant Navy is different from the navy in the sense that it offers commercial services, as opposed to the navy, which is largely involved in the defense of a nation.

You have a very bright chance of job opportunities after marine engineering. But I wonder why you want to do marine engineering after your mechanical engineering. If an offshore job is your priority then do merchant navy course. It is for a maximum 3-years duration only.

Shipping companies in the government and private sector provide favorable job prospect and growth along with foreign shipping lines and companies. This sector requires bright and talented freshers who can be vested with the duty of ship operation and maintenance. A fresher in merchant navy job can expect a minimum remuneration of Rs. 2.3 Lacs Rs. 3.4 Lacs. The salary increases with your growth and promotion.

Hi Swami!
The eligibility for joining merchant navy is finishing class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
Candidates have to be unmarried Indian citizens (male or female).
Normal vision is required but glasses up to plus or minus 2.5 may be allowed.
Admission is through an entrance followed by a screening test and a main written examination.
After clearing the test, there is an interviewand a medicaltest.
You also need to complete a ship-training course prior to the employment. The course is generally short-term where the candidates are taught basic security concerns of voyaging.

Hello Sunil,
Merchant Navy is a dream for many youngsters. It excites them. Idea of visiting different countries, fabulous salaries, etc. all play a part. In India too, use of water as means of transportation is going to increase. Hence, opportunities for employment are going to be great.On the other hand, aeronautical engineering has shown immense potential but my analysis says that opportunities are very limited. Opportunities are there in aviation but not in aeronautics. Hence, I would advise you to opt for merchant navy.
