Merchant Navy officers are working along ships. These sail in waters and as a result you are away from home for long periods of time. So, to compensate, many companies offer such arrangement but it's not the rule.

Candidates wishing to enter the navigational and engineering fields of Merchant Navy need to complete their B.Sc. degree in mechanical or marine engineering, before they can gain admission to the field. In some cases, students who have completed their 12th with PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) are eligible to join as Deck Cadets.
Navigating Officers - Candidates will need to obtain a Certificate of Competency, as per the regulations in India relating to the examinations of Masters and Mates. Conducted by the Ministry of Surface Transport, in association with the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) Mumbai, the examination

But as you are a science stream in your 12th then you have the option of NDA examination for joining Merchant navy if you have the qualifications given here under:-
You must have the citizenship of India.
You must be an unmarried male candidate.
You must have done your 12th with science stream student with physics, chemistry and mathematics as your main subjects from a recognized board.
Your age must be within 16.5 years to 19 years.
