Candidates wishing to enter the navigational and engineering fields of Merchant Navy need to complete their B.Sc. degree in mechanical or marine engineering, before they can gain admission to the field. In some cases, students who have completed their 12th with PCM (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) are eligible to join as Deck Cadets.

It has campuses at Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Visakhapatnam and Cochin. University conducts degree and Post graduate courses on Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Ship building and International Transportation and Logistics Management. Lot of private colleges are affiliated to IMU. IMU conducts its own entrance namely All India Common Entrance Test. You may appear in CET to pursue your merchant navy career.

In the present days, Shipping Industry is going under recession & in a global industry such as merchant navy , it is imperative for one to consider various factors prior to embarking on a journey at sea. While there are numerous institutions providing education in this sector , quite a few things are important to consider beyond placements. A wider approach can lead you through a long term career trajectory, rather than thinking about immediate future which might create hurdles after a few years.So,considering all such factors I would rank these colleges as -:

The eligibility for joining merchant navy is finishing class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
Candidates have to be unmarried Indian citizens (male or female).
Normal vision is required but glasses up to plus or minus 2.5 may be allowed.
Admission is through an entrance followed by a screening test and a main written examination.
After clearing the test, there is an interviewand a medicaltest.
You also need to complete a ship-training course prior to the employment. The course is generally short-term where the candidates are taught basic security concerns of voyaging.
