The Zaporizhzhia State Medical University (ZSMU) is a privately-funded institution of higher education in Ukraine. The history of the institution dates back to 1903 when the Pedagogic Courses were organized for women in the port city of Odessa. In the year 1921, these courses were reorganized and the Chemical-Pharmaceutical Institute came into being. The institution was renamed as the State Pharmaceutical Institute in 1935 followed by another name change when ZSMU relocated to its present-day site in 1959. In 1964, the institution added the medical faculty to its curriculum and was renamed in 1968. It was in 1994 that it received the status of a university under its current name. The university has accreditation from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
ZSMU has a beautiful campus in the city of Zaporizhzhia, located on the banks of the Dnieper River with picturesque surroundings. The campus features five academic buildings that house high-tech laboratories, smart classrooms, libraries with reading halls and computer rooms. The university library has a rare and unique selection of electronic and printed resources that can be accessed by teachers and students. It also features a medical center and a dispensary where the faculty and students can get treatment on the campus. ZSMU has five hostels that accommodate 3000 students. The university has several cafes and canteens in its premises where the students can enjoy gourmet and healthy meals, snacks and drinks as well as Indian cuisines. Other facilities on the campus include a shoe repair shop and a cloth repair store.
The university offers excellent athletic and recreational facilities to the students. The sports center is home to a swimming pool, stadium, chess and draughts club, shooting-range, fitness club, three gymnasiums and tennis courts. It also features athletic fields for sports like basketball, track and field, mini-football, volleyball and football. The institution has various clubs that organize various events to promote academic, personal and social interests.
The academic structure of ZSMU is organized into eight faculties that offer undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in pharmaceutical sciences, nursing and health services. It also extends doctoral degrees with specialization in at least one medical discipline. The Zaporizhzhia Regional Clinical Hospital that has a capacity of 800 is the base of seven departments of the university. At present, about 10,200 students are pursuing degrees from ZSMU, which includes more than 2200 international learners from 40 different countries. It has experienced and knowledgeable academic affiliates, administrative officers and helping staff who offer all the guidance and assistance to the students.
ZSMU has a vast alumni network of 10,500 graduates living and working in 100 countries of the world. Many of its alumni are working at high posts and are recognized for their contribution in the medical field. The university keeps a record of the achievements of its alumni and takes pride in celebrating them.
