Originally known as Lawrence University, the University of Kansas came into existence in 1865. In 1866, the first class was held at Kansas University. In 1893, the University of Kansas Law School was founded. In 1905, the provision for awarding degrees in medicine began and by 1924, the school for hospital teaching shifted to the medical center.
