NIRF 2024 Rankings are out. As per the latest NIRF 2024 rankings, IIT Madras ranks #1 under the category 'Engineering'.
The GATE 2025 admit cards have been released for admission to the MTech course. Registered candidates can log in and download their admit cards from the official website. The GATE 2025 exam will be conducted on Feb 1, 2, 15, and 16, 2025.
A few more updates are given below:
- The JEE Main 2025 Session 1 exam for IIT Madras admission to BE/BTech courses is scheduled to be held between Jan 22 and Jan 29, 2025. For BArch and BPlan courses, the exam is to be conducted on Jan 30, 2025.
- The JEE Advanced 2025 exam date has been announced for the BTech course. As per the official website, the JEE Advanced 2025 exam will be conducted on May 18, 2025. Further, the application form will be released in Apr 2025.
- The IIT JAM 2025 admit cards are now available for admission to the MSc course. Registered candidates can log in and download their hall tickets by visiting the official website. The IIT JAM 2025 exam is scheduled for Feb 2, 2025.
- The IISER Aptitude Test 2024 Counselling process is closed for admission to 5-year Integrated BS-MS courses with Round 8 closing rank & seat allocation results. The IISER Aptitude Test 2025 dates for the next academic session are yet to be released.
- PhD and MS (By Research) Jul 2025 applications are open, and the last date to apply Mar 31, 2025.
- BSc (Online in Data Science and Applications) Jan 2025 applications are closed now. The entrance exam will be held on Feb 23, 2025.

IIT Madras Popular Programmes 2025
Presently, IIT Madras offers around 100 UG, PG, joint degree, exchange and research programmes. It awards the degrees of BTech, BTech-MTech (Dual Degree), BS-MS (Dual Degree), Integrated MA, MTech, MBA, MSc, MS by Research and PhD in the fields of Engineering, Science, Architecture, Management, and Social Sciences. BTech is the flagship programme of IIT Madras and it is of four-year duration. The duration of PG programmes, such as MTech, MBA, MSc, etc. is two years each. Additionally, IITM has signed MoUs with foreign universities to offer Joint PhD and JDP programmes. The institute is also known for its Quality Improvement Programme (QIP), which is sponsored by the AICTE and is the world’s first online BSc programme.

IIT Madras Admission Process & Important Dates 2025
The mode of IIT Madras course admissions is online. IIT Madras admission to various programmes is done through national-level entrance exams including JEE Main/ JEE Advanced, IIT JAM and GATE, among others. For admission to the flagship BTech programmes, candidates are selected based on valid JEE-Advanced ranks followed by the JoSAA counselling process. On the successful completion of the counselling process, candidates are selected for the final seat allotment after the documents verification and tuition fee payment. IIT Madras Application Process 2025
Students who have missed the JEE Main exams must not worry, these students can apply again the next year. Candidates willing to get admission must take part in the IIT Madras admission process before the last date of application. Candidates must know their eligibility criteria and apply accordingly. Follow the IIT Madras application process mentioned below:
Step 1: Visit the official website to register for the JEE Main exam.
Step 2: Appear for the JEE Main exam.
Step 3: Register for the counselling.
Step 4: Pay the admission fee to the selected and the allotted college.
IIT Madras Faculty
IIT Madras has a wide array of faculty comprising 550 teaching staff and 1,250 administrative and support staff across all academic departments, most of the teaching staff holding PhD degrees in their respective fields. The best-in-class faculty members are all alumni from reputed national and international universities, and hold an immense amount of experience in their sectors. The faculty members include professors, assistant professors, associate professors, among others. IIT Madras students are also visited by several guest lecturers that visit the campus from time to time. Apart from this, IIT Madras also involves the alumni in its educational and research activities, whenever possible, by inviting them to participate on its advisory boards as visiting faculty or as guest speakers.
IIT Madras Student Life and Culture
The IIT Madras campus was formerly a part of Guindy National Park. Adjoining the park, IIT Madras is home to large numbers of spotted deer, bonnet macaque, monkeys, antelopes, and other rare wildlife. The campus also houses over 300 species of trees and plants. One can easily find antelopes, deer, and other animals roaming freely on the campus. IIT Madras is also home to about 100 species of birds seen at different times of the year. IIT Madras offers a one-of-a-kind experience to students studying at the campus.
IIT Madras is a residential institute and has 20 hostels, named after different Indian rivers. The students celebrate various festivals on the campus such as Holi, Pongal, Onam, Diwali, and New Year’s Eve. Students from all over the country take admission at IIT Madras, hence, celebrating different festivals exposes them to different cultures and perspectives, inculcating a feeling of brotherhood and respect toward one another. A hostel night is also organised by each hostel, every year to celebrate and bond over food and music.
Indian Institute of Technology–Madras (IIT–Madras) also organises various campus festivals such as Shaastra, the annual technical festival of IIT Madras, and Saarang, which is organised for five days. Saarang is considered the 'Mother of all Cultural Festivals', across the country. It is attended by over 50,000 people from all over the country. Many cultural events, competitions, and professional shows are organised during the Saraang Fest. Furthermore, many artists such as Balamurli Krishna, Ustad Bismillah Khan, Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan, Vishal-Shekhar, and Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, have performed at this fest. In addition to this, the institute also organises several departmental fests.
IIT Madras also houses several clubs and societies run by the students for their all-round development. These include Hindi Mitra Mandal, Quiz Club, Music Club, Writing Club, Comedy Club, and Informals Club, among others.

IIT Madras: How to Reach
The IIT Madras campus is located on Sardar Patel Road, halfway between the Raj Bhavan and the Adyar bus terminus, i.e. about 12 km from Chennai Central. It takes approximately 45 mins to reach IIT Madras from the airport, railway stations, or Koyambedu bus terminus. You may choose to hire an Auto/Taxi from Chennai Central Railway Station. The bus stop is right opposite the Central Station. The direct buses to the campus are 19B and 5C. If you take any of them, get down to Gandhi Mandapam or CLRI, which is within walking distance from the IIT main gate.
