A merchant James McGill's bequest established McGill University in 1813 as the University of McGill College. James McGill wrote a will between 1811 and 1813 leaving a 19-hectare (47-acre) tract of rural land and approximately GBP 10,000 to the Royal Institute for the Advancement of Learning.
