Maynooth University was formally established as an autonomous university in 1997. But, its origins can be traced back to 1795 when the Royal College of St. Patrick was founded, making Maynooth Ireland’s youngest university and one of the oldest educational institutes. Also, in 1795, Maynooth College was founded. In 1871, Maynooth College became completely independent. In 1896, it became a Pontifical University and in 1919, it became a recognized college of the National University of Ireland. The Universities Act 1997 re-structured the National University of Ireland and the college at Maynooth became the National University of Ireland, Maynooth University.
