M.S. in Data Science - Batch of 2024
4.8
Academic and research centric university.
Tips: The university is very rigorous in terms of academics so be prepared for that. Apart from that, sports and other clubs are also very active but mainly education and research are their forte. If you want to explore your interests in the research field, this is the best option for you.
Likes (Safety): The university spends a good amount of money on students' safety despite the city being very unsafe. They have their own police force, they have deployed security at several locations and also they have their own transport shuttle which provides point-to-point service from evening till late night.
Dislikes (Internships): Getting an internship is comparatively more difficult than getting a research assistantship at the university. They don't have many industrial connections in other departments than Biotech, Bioinformatics, etc. People in these fields may get some departmental help, but others may have to look on their own for jobs and internships.

M.S. in Computer Science - Batch of 2024

Low ROI and quality after spending huge amount.
Tips: This university is not very good for Master's in CSE and most of the courses are medical domain oriented. Low ROI and quality after sending a huge amount. This university is good for doing a PhD in Computer Science, and Chemical Engineering as they have a huge budget for the medical domain.
Likes (Part time work): There are plenty of part-time options available in university though they pay less. Johns Hopkins University offers a variety of part-time opportunities for students, providing a way to gain experience, meet people, and earn some extra income. However, while these positions are plentiful, the pay is generally modest. Many students work as research assistants, lab assistants, or administrative aids in various departments. These roles can be excellent for gaining hands-on experience, especially for students in Science, engineering, or health-related fields, where they can work directly with faculty members on projects that align with their academic interests. There are also opportunities in campus facilities, such as working at the library, student centres, dining services, or assisting with events and campus activities. These jobs often require fewer specialized skills, making them accessible to a wide range of students, even those in their first year. However, the wages for these roles tend to be lower than in private-sector part-time jobs, which can be a downside for students trying to balance their budgets, especially given Baltimore's cost of living. Additionally, some students take on Course Assistant (CA) or Teaching Assistant (TA) positions. While these roles usually provide a bit more pay and valuable teaching experience, they often require a significant time commitment and may be limited to students who have excelled in specific courses.
Dislikes (Indian Food): You have to make your own food. Baltimore has a few Indian restaurants, but the experience can vary significantly, especially for students living off-campus. While I don't rate it 1 star, the challenges often make it feel that way, particularly for those accustomed to authentic Indian flavour. First, the taste and authenticity can be hit or miss. Some restaurants try to cater to a broader audience, which can dilute the spice levels and flavour depth essential in Indian cuisine. This sometimes results in dishes that lack the richness and complexity of Indian home-cooked food, making it underwhelming for someone familiar with it. Another issue is the limited options for affordable, good-quality Indian food close to popular student neighbourhoods. Even if you find a good place, the prices are often higher compared to cooking at home. For students, budgeting is crucial, and eating out frequently at such rates isn't sustainable. Delivery options, which are sometimes the only way to access Indian food from off-campus, can be unreliable or add extra cost, compounding the convenience. Finally, some ingredients used here don't have the same freshness or flavor as they would in India, imparting the food quality. For those who have the time and resources, cooking at home is often the best way to satisfy authentic Indian cravings. While Baltimore does offer a taste of Indian cuisine, the experience just doesn't match the expectations of those who grew up enjoying it authentically, hence the sentiment.

MS in Biotechnology - Batch of 2024

A University of Paradise where faculties are top class.
Tips: Before joining to the University, I would ask all the prospective students to make sure they have all the original documents and also at least 5-10 copies of each. You never know when it will be required. While arriving make sure to have some cash in hand as it is really important for traveling and as we don't know the location.
Likes (Indian Food): The Johns Hopkins University campus is situated at various locations in the US and Europe. My campus is really great and beautiful. It is very diverse and is filled by students across the globe. Coming from India, here the campus culture is really great, it is very diverse. We are able to interact with different national students and get to know about their culture, tradition and also their language.
Dislikes (Student Life): At The Johns Hopkins University, the faculties are of top class. They all are highly qualified and are well established research scholars. Each of the faculty has a laboratory headed by them in which the faculties are encouraged to pursue their research. The laboratory facilities here at The Johns Hopkins University is of top class. The classrooms are very well diversified. Under the guidance of such faculties, the students who really have a passion for research are found and picked up to pursue their ideas. The faculties are student-friendly and so will clear the student's doubts anytime and anywhere.

Professional Master of Computer Science (MCS) - Batch of 2020
Offered by University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
4.5
One of the best CS grad schools where I was able to make net positive money during my Masters!
Tips: Do not let cold weather be a reason for not joining UIUC, you get used to it. Apart from the thesis, there is no difference between MS and MS programme and both are considered the same for job applications but the thesis programme helps you improve your profile by getting to work with a professor on a research project. Computer Science programme has decent TA/RA opportunities and if you get one, you get 100% fee waiver and $2500 monthly stipend which is well above the monthly expenses. Post covid, intake to the professional MS programme has significantly increased from ~60 to ~300 resulting in a lot more competition to get a TA/RA.
Likes (Quality of faculty): UIUC has some of the best faculty in Computer Science, many times professors teach content that has been published in books by themselves. UIUC has many diverse professors, a very wide choice of course selection and a lot of flexibility in choosing courses.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Since Urban-Champaign is a college town, there are not that many Indian restaurants and for people who eat Jain food, there are hardly any food options outside. But there are many events in the department buildings where you can occasionally get free Pizzas.

Best campustown in USA which gives you most bang for your buck compared to anywhere in states
Tips: Very accommodating culture. It will be the best experience of your life. Teachers are very knowledgeable. MS programme can be tailored to your liking where you can take courses from any department without much restrictions. This happened to be the best experience of my life.
Likes (Safety): Campustown is organized in a manner where all the students converge to Green Street where we have everything needed creating an awesome environment to meet new people and have fun. Cricket lovers can join Cricket Club of Illinois for a rewarding cricket experience and tons of tournaments in summer.
Dislikes (Public transportation): Faculty is very approachable and compassionate. After first semester most Masters student can find a RA or TA position. Try to meet with the faculty and show what drives you to do research and teaching and you will get a way around. The faculty is well-educated and mostly from universities ranked above UIUC.

Most people and faculty are friendly.
Tips: Champaign is the best town to live in for those coming to the US for the first time. Pros such as low rent, a friendly campus, etc. can be of help. I availed a Research Assistantship which resulted in a tuition fee waiver. Very satisfied with my courses and the University.

My Review on doing a Masters in UIUC
Tips: Since the university is in Illinois, the weather during the winters is brutal, which most Indians will find difficult to adapt to. Hence I advise you to buy proper winter clothes when winter approaches. The grocery stores on or near campus are also expensive, so you need to learn how to buy food in bulk without wasting anything. UIUC has a large diaspora of not only Indians but other nationalities as well, so socializing is necessary but not tedious. Despite this, feelings of loneliness can set in since everyone will be busy studying for their courses, which one should be prepared for.
Likes (Public transportation): The campus has a functional transportation service which is free for students of UIUC, with plenty of buses there to reach most parts of Champaign-Urban. Despite buses taking more time to reach the destination you wish to go to, the part that is already included in your tuition fees is convenient since one pays $60 as public transportation fees.
Dislikes (Value for money): Since I did my Masters in Aerospace Engineering, finding internships for myself was tedious due to ITAR. And unlike Indian institutes, we have to find internships by ourselves because most companies that come to the career fair look for US citizens only, though I would advise going to the career fair anyway to network.

You will be required to work hard.
Tips: UIUC is a work hard-play hard type of university. If you're into that, then definitely do apply! Also keep in mind that UIUC does not give out many scholarships to international students. The research opportunities are great here, along with more than 1000+ clubs and organizations.
Likes (Public transportation): The bus transportation system is one of the best in the country. The bus system is free for all students, and the bus network extends beyond the campus, to the surrounding Champaign-Urbana area. There are a number of buses, which means there's never a shortage or long waiting time on them. Buses are also more so generally they are quite on time.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There aren't many authentic versions of Indian dishes in the dining halls. Although, you could get Indian food in restaurants outside the campus. Some days, in particular dining halls such as ISR, Indian food is provided in the form of samosas or paneer, however I wouldn't rely on the authenticity.

Life changing and worthwhile experience.
Tips: Before you join this university, it is important to prepare beforehand regarding the course curriculum and academic requirements. If possible, get a tour of the campus before you permanently move in and join whatever informative sessions are held. Part- time opportunities are not so great.
