MS in Data Science - Batch of 2024

I would say that the University and the area around is calm and immersed in nature.
Tips: There is very little cultural shift transitioning to the university as there are many people from the community around the area. Students applying to the university should consider sending their GRE scores, even though it is not mandatory, as it evaluates the percentage of scholarships you could get. I am satisfied with my university and the area around me.
Likes (Part time work): There are plenty of part-time jobs available on campus. People should keep looking for the postings frequently there are plenty of opportunities posted in the portals every week. As students can work a maximum of 20 hours per week, the work is pretty easy to manage. The average payout is $15 per hour.
Dislikes (Internships): There is a lot of guidance available for internships but there aren't enough internships available in the Rochester Area. The career fair that happens in the university won't be much of use for this and CS Students as most of the companies look for US citizens or majors in core areas like Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.

It's a decent college in a not so expensive city.
Tips: Mostly everyone gets a scholarship. There is a lot of difference in culture. With time everyone adapts. You will find some great teachers and subjects. Try to get a research assistant on-campus job. Not a lot to do in the city, in fact quite boring, so make some good friends.
Likes (Part time work): Plenty of options and mostly everyone gets an on-campus job. You can check the website for more information. Dining services, teaching assistant and research assistant are the most common on-campus jobs. You can't work outside for the first 9 months.
Dislikes (Safety): Rochester is not a safe city, some areas are really dangerous. Staying on campus is a better option. Areas like the 19th award witness crimes on a regular basis. University has done well by introducing Public safety but by no means the crimes have topped.

Good public transportation.
Tips: Beware of job scenarios, things could be difficult, so research before coming in. Look into seniors and ask them for advice whenever possible. Start prepping for jobs and internships early on. Focus on creating a network with different people of different cultures.
Likes (Public transportation): There is a good public transportation bus service called RTA Roam in Rochester and is really helpful. You can see the bus location on an app and plan your schedule. The University also has its own coloured line for bus. That helps too. They have an app as well.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): I have no idea about it. Frankly, everything depends on whether you get a job or you choose the Ph.D. track. University cannot help much in this case as it is student-by-student dependent. Think before what you want to do and plan accordingly. Be flexible as well.

CU is the best place to study and get involved.
Tips: This college is student-friendly, which provides a lot of free transportation options, career support for students, and many on-campus opportunities. Additionally, the location is away from busy cities and provides a calm environment for students. However, the college doesn't offer any scholarships for international students.
Likes (Safety): The campus is very safe. There are CCTVs all over the place and only students and faculty members can enter the academic buildings. Moreover, CU provides free cabs in the evening for students to commute between campus and house. Also in general, the people in Boulder are student-friendly and helpful, and I've never encountered any bad experience till now.
Dislikes (Internships): The market is pretty bad and the college can only support up to a point. There are career services available, however, they can barely help you to fix your resume. Also, the college is in Boulder- where there are very less tech companies- adding more burden to hunt jobs.

Make the most out of your college. Have fun, be involved in student groups
Tips: There are lot of international student groups in campus which makes transition easy. I did RA and TA as part of my college and was able to pay a major part of fees from it. The power electronics degree from CU Boulder is one of the best in the world with a key focus on industry standards.
Likes (Safety): Boulder campus is very safe, there are police patrolling 24*7 around the campus. Also there are night cabs provided by the campus which makes commuting easy for students staying back in the library for late-night study and discussions. The police and security are always available on call.
Dislikes (Student Life): Boulder is one of the most beautiful campuses in the US. There are different organizations on campus where you could potentially be part of and participate in various programs. Also, there are different programs organized by the departments. Active participation in the student groups makes you stand out from the crowd.
