How to Book GMAT Slot?

As the number of applicants is increasing every year, it is recommended that you do not wait until the last moment to register for the GMAT. You should rather do it while you are preparing for the exam, and book the GMAT slot at least a month before the day you wish to attempt the exam. Especially, during the peak season which begins around November every year, one should try to book the slot for the GMAT exam 3-4 months before the desired date of attempting.

GMAT slot booking will give the applicants two timeframes to choose from, and they are:

  1. 9:15 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or,
  2. 1:15 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Based on preference, applicants can choose from the above-mentioned slots to appear for the GMAT exam. These time slots are the most preferable for Indian applicants appearing for the GMAT exam.

Q:   How will students know the right time to book a GMAT slot?

A:

Candidates should book the GMAT slot at least 3 to 5 months prior to the admission deadlines for their desired university. Moreover, it is better to book the GMAT slot at least 3-6 months prior to your desired test date. As you will get plenty of time to prepare for the exam. Consider the following points before GMAT slot booking:

  • Let us say that your University application deadline is 1st November.
  • Now consider 6 months’ time prior to 1st November, i.e. 1st May. Hence, from 1st May onwards you need to consider GMAT preparation + GMAT slot booking + application document preparation.
  • If you have time, then you can prepare for the GMAT beforehand only so that you have sufficient time to prepare your admission documents and choose a GMAT slot of your choice.

Make sure that you research all the factors such as the time required for GMAT exam preparation, document preparation, university deadlines, etc. It is crucial for students to take into account every aspect of their study-abroad application to avoid any last minute hassles.

  • Work Experience: Students do not need any minimum work experience to register for the GMAT exam.

It is vital to note that MBA colleges might have certain eligibility requirements. Students are advised to note the MBA admission requirements for different colleges before applying.

Q:   Who is eligible for GMAT exam?

A:

Irrespective of the educational background, completion of high school or not, applicants are eligible to appear for the GMAT exam. However, those applicants will be eligible for GMAT, those who:

  • Are 18 years or above
  • Or, those who are 13 - 17 years old, can appear for GMAT after parent/guardian's consent at a test centre.
  • Have not exceeded five attempts in a year or exhausted eight overall attempts.
  • Also had scored 805 on GMAT and have completed five years of taking the exam.

If these criteria are fulfilled, applicants are eligible to take the GMAT exam.

Q:   Can I take the GMAT test after completing 12th?

A:

Yes, a candidate can appear for the GMAT exam after completing the 12th class. However, the GMAT exam is accepted for postgraduate (graduate) degrees and not for undergraduate degrees. In addition to this, students must note that in order to appear for the GMAT exam, they need to be at least 18 years of age. Students, who are in the age group of 13 years to 17 years, are also eligible to appear for the GMAT exam if they are able to provide a written approval or consent (No Object Certificate or NOC) by their parents or legal guardians.

Points to Consider Before GMAT Registration and Slot Booking

After your GMAT registration, you will book the GMAT exam dates. Before you proceed with the booking of your GMAT exam dates, there are a few important points that you must consider:

  • Study Abroad Intakes: Primarily, there are 3 major study abroad intakes; Fall Intake, Spring Intake, and Summer Intake. Students need to be clear about the courses and specializations that are offered in these intakes. In addition, students need to be clear about the admission rates, class profile, GMAT cut-offs, etc. for different intakes.
  • Admission Deadlines: Different MBA Colleges have different admission deadlines. The students need to have prior information about the admission deadlines so that students plan their GMAT preparation and prepare their application documents well in time.
  • Application Documents: The students must know that a good GMAT score is not the only criterion for getting admission to a top MBA college. B-Schools also require other application documents that are equally important. These include an updated resume, a statement of purpose, 2-3 letters of recommendation, 1-3 admission essays, etc. It is necessary to prepare these documents well before the application deadlines to avoid any last-minute hassles.
  • Student Visa: Students must be aware of the visa application requirements for different countries such as those of the US, Canada, the UK, etc.

It is vital to plan your entire GMAT preparation and application documents carefully to ensure a smooth admission process.

Q:   How long does it take to prepare for GMAT?

A:

Preparing for the GMAT test takes time and sincere efforts. You can prepare for the exam in six to eight months or it can be 3-4 months depending on your practice and ability. You need to give consistent efforts to get a good GMAT score. Make sure that you understand the GMAT pattern and syllabus before you purchase any study material. You must start with the GMAT official study material and then move on the other standard resources such as the Manhattan Prep guides. You must also appear for GMAT mock tests every week to gauge your progress.

Q:   How much time should I keep between the GMAT exam and MBA application dates?

A:

Before understanding the timeline, let us understand what all factors are important for your MIM or MBA admissions. These factors include your undergraduate percentage or GPA, GMAT score, statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, admission essays, updated resume, work experience (if applicable), and performance on the interview. It is advised that you begin your research for the MBA or MIM College at least 10-12 months before the application deadline. In these 10-12 months, you need to prepare for the GMAT, prepare your application documents, arrange all the finances, and complete your paper work. Typically, it takes 3-6 months to prepare for the GMAT. You must also keep some buffer time just in case if you have to retake the GMAT exam. Hence, ideally speaking, there must be 6-8 months of gap between your GMAT exam date and MBA or MIM application deadline (considering 4 months of preparation).
