PTE cut-off marks are the minimum PTE scores required to be admitted to a university abroad. The PTE scores range from 10 - 90 points, with 10 being the lowest and 90 being the highest score. The Pearson PLC Group, the conducting body of the PTE exams, has not designated any PTE cut-off scores. However, the different ranges of the PTE scores are associated with the different CEFR levels. Most top universities and colleges abroad require a CEFR B2 level (equivalent to a PTE score range of 59-75) of proficiency from their prospective students to be able to get admitted and pursue most of their bachelor's programs.

PTE Exam Cut-off

Q:   What is the required score to crack PTE exam?

A:

According to the Pearson PLC Group, PTE test takers should aim to score a minimum of CEFR B2 level, which equals to a PTE Academic score range of 59-75. With that level of English proficiency, the students become eligible to apply for most of the universities abroad. These scores imply that the student can follow academic-level instructions and participate in academic education both coursework and student life. This level of English is also considered eligible for professional registration, employment and applying for Australian skilled migration visas. Any PTE score corresponding to an above-CEFR B2 level is considered a good PTE score.

Q:   What are the cut-off marks for PTE exam?

A:

The cut-off marks for the PTE exam are not defined by the Pearson PLC Group (the conducting body of the exam). However, universities abroad define the minimum PTE scores required to get admitted to their pretigious courses. Most Universities require a PTE score 59 to shortlist student applications. Thus, students must aim to receive at least 59 marks on thir PTE exam

Q:   Is 75 a good PTE score?

A:

Yes. A 75 PTE score falls under the 'Very Good' category. A PTE 75 score is equivalent to IELTS 7.5 - 8.0 band score. However, candidates should note that the real determining factor is their preferred university PTE score requirements. If they are eligible to apply with their PTE scores, good or else they can always re-take the test.

Q:   Why take the PTE Exam? What is PTE full form?

A:

The PTE exam, or Pearson Test of English, is a computer-based English language test that assesses your academic-level speaking, writing, reading and listening skills. It is designed for people who want to study or work in an English-speaking country.

The PTE exam is different from other English language tests, such as the IELTS and TOEFL, in a few ways:

  • It is computer-based: This means that you take the test entirely on a computer, and your answers are also scored by a computer.
  • It is integrated: This means that the speaking, writing, reading, and listening sections of the test are all integrated into one test session. You need not to visit your PTE exam centre on 2-3 different dates, the entire exam gets concluded within 1 session on 1 single test session test date.
  • It is scored on a global scale: This means that your score is reported on a scale of 10-90,  which is the same scale used for all PTE tests worldwide.

Q:   How much PTE score is required for UK Tier 4 General Student visa for degree level and above courses?

A:

The minimum PTE scores required for the UK Tier 4 General Student visa for the degree level and above courses is 59

Commonly asked questions

Q:   What is the passing score for PTE test?

A:

There is no passing marks for the PTE exam.

Q:   What is the minimum PTE score required for admission in Australian universities?

A:

As per Pearson PTE, the minimum PTE scores required to obtain an Australian student visa is 42. This much of score makes you eligible to apply for the Subclass 500 visa. However, the universities may need an even higher PTE score depending on the course and location you choose. Hence, it is advisable that you confirm the exact PTE score requirement for your course at your desired university's website.

Q:   How many times can a candidate appear for the PTE exam?

A:

A candidate can take the PTE exam 12 times within a period of 12 months. An extra number of attempt(s) can be granted only if your reason for requesting an extended number of attempts aligns with the Pearson PTE test's retake policy. However, candidates cannot sit for another PTE exam until the following conditions are met -

  1. They have received the results of their last PTE exam. Until you receive the result of your last PTE test, you will not be able to register for a new one on the official PTE website.
  2. They have not already booked another PTE exam date. If you have booked a PTE test date, you will not be able to book another one. This is done to ensure that all the PTE test seats are taken by test takers at all times.

One can book another PTE test at the next convenient date after they have received the results of the previous test. In the light of above points, candidates can take their next PTE exam within a gap of 4-5 days, and this is the only criteria set by the board. Therefore, candidates can take the PTE Academic exam as many times as they want, with each attempt separated by a minimum of 5 days. They only need to wait to receive their scores before they can book their next test. Candidates should note that PTE Test Scores are made available to test takers within 2 days.

Q:   How many questions are there in the PTE test?

A:

The Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic has 20 different question types divided into three sections: Speaking and Writing, Reading, and Listening. Each segment contains a different number of questions, totalling roughly 70-82 questions. The Speaking and Writing segment has approximately 28-36 questions, which include tasks such as reading aloud, repeating lines, describing imagery, and essay writing. The Reading part consists of 13-18 questions, including multiple-choice questions, re-ordering paragraphs, and fill-in-the-blanks. The Listening phase normally contains 15-20 questions, including summarising spoken text, multiple-choice questions, and dictation. The amount of questions differs significantly between tests, but these ranges provide a realistic indication for test takers studying for the PTE Academic.

FAQs for PTE Exam 2025

Q&A Icon
Commonly asked questions

Q:   Is PTE harder than IELTS?

A:

Yes, PTE may seem harder to some students who have taken the IELTS exam earlier. This is because the PTE exam is concluded in a single sitting of 2 hours. However, the IELTS exam takes place in two different sittings within a span of a week. This gives students more time to prepare for the speaking part of the IELTS test.

One other difficulty that the student may come around is that the test is completely automated and student may not find any human examiner for any part of the test. This might intimidate the students who are not comfortable with taking the test on a computer.

Q:   Is the PTE Academic test easy to crack?

A:

Although the PTE Academic exam can be difficult, it is possible to pass it with the correct preparation. It evaluates English proficiency with computer-based speaking, writing, listening, and reading exercises that call for flexibility and fast thinking. Some people may find the test easier to handle, particularly those who are tech-savvy and speak English well. Practice is crucial because the computerised scoring system can be stringent on fluency, grammar, and pronunciation. Performance can be greatly enhanced by time management, practice in each section on a regular basis, and familiarity with the test format. Test-takers can improve their confidence and strengthen their areas of weakness by using preparation materials like tutorials and mock exams. Many people succeed in passing the PTE Academic exam with commitment and methodical practice.

Q:   Is PTE accepted in Canada?

A:

Yes, PTE is accepted in Canada. There are more than 70 universities in Canada that accept the PTE scores for international admissions. PTE exam can also help you to fast-track your university and visa applications. The PTE Core exam is also accepted by the Canadian government for visa and immigration purposes.
