RWTH Aachen University History
RWTH Aachen University was established on October 10, 1870, when the people of Aachen entered the university, an institution of higher education that would prepare the students for their future. Aachen was an industrializing society back in the days when the institution shifted its approach from a traditional humanistic education to a practical one inclined more towards Science. The institution started with an enrollment of over 201 students when the institution first began its academic year in 1870/1871. Today, RWTH Aachen University is regarded as the largest technical university in the German-speaking world with a high enrollment of students. In 1857, multiple cities competed with each other in order to acquire this educational institution, however, in the end, the decision was in Aachen’s favor as it committed to offering equal innovative institutions.
The foundation stone of the institution was laid on May 15, 1865, with around 9 departments namely, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Civil Engineering, Surveying, and others. In 1898, RWTH introduced a two-year course of study and launched its Laboratory for Machines in 1899. Over the years, RWTH Aachen University continued to introduce multiple academic degrees and witnessed the enrollment of women to the university in 1909/1910.
