Klaipeda University: Courses, Admission, Cost

Klaipeda University (KU) was established on 1st January 1991 by a decree of Lithuanian Parliament's Supreme Council known as Seimas. The then Chairman of Seimas, Vytautas Landsbergis, signed this decree. The new university was formed through the merger of the city's existing higher education institutions. Initially, the university consisted of just three faculties. At present, it has grown to comprise eight institutes and seven faculties. The university is officially accredited by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania. Also, it holds the memberships of various international networks and organisations, including the Baltic University Network (BUP) and the European Union Universities of Small States (EU²S²).

Situated in the seaport of Klaipeda in Lithuania, the KU Campus occupies a site that formerly served as a military campus. The historical campus is spread across 58 acres and is home to six Neo-Gothic buildings. These striking buildings have been declared as architectural monuments. It offers numerous academic and administrative facilities. With more than 60 research laboratories, a research vessel-laboratory named Mintis, a yacht known as Odyssey and a training and research sailboat called Brabander, the campus is equipped with world-class marine research infrastructure. The huge university library houses over half a million volumes and journals. Also, the campus features a botanical garden and a publishing house. Its infrastructure supports the development of applied and fundamental research, development and research projects and international cultural activities.

KU offers 11 doctoral, 58 bachelor's, 56 master's, 2 specialised vocational and 7 joint international programmes in various fields, including humanities, biomedicine, physical education, technology and social sciences. It is home to approximately 3,000 students including many international students and over 550 qualified researchers and teachers. The university undertakes more than 60 local and international research projects every year. It maintains partnerships with numerous international institutions like Teesside University in Great Britain, BTI -Teis?s institutas in Belarus, Valdosta State University in Georgia, the University of Rijeka in Croatia, Jiva Institute in India, the University of Murcia in Spain, George Mason University in the USA and Mugla University in Turkey.

Ever since its establishment, KU has produced over 33,600 graduates, including accomplished doctors, scientists, government executives, politicians, entrepreneurs, engineers, cultural figures, educators and performers. Vasilijus Safronovas is a well-known historian. Ingrida Valinskien? is a popular singer and filmmaker. Eligijus Masiulis is a successful politician who has formerly served as Lithuania's Minister of Transport and Communications. Agn? Bilotait? is an important member of Seimas. Tomas Šernas used to be a customs officer before he survived a gunshot to the head during the Medininkai Massacre, which left him disabled. Mindaugas Rojus is a famous opera singer known for his solo performances at Klaip?da State Music Theatre. Many other notable people have graduated from the university.
