  • Document must be formatted properly. Page size A4, margins ‘Normal’, ‘justified’ alignment, and ‘single’ spaced. Use serif fonts like Times New Roman or Ariel in 11-12 point size.
  • Mention complete details of every activity, including what, where, when and your role.
  • Dates and duration of each information should be mentioned clearly.
  • Start every bullet point with an appropriate action verb such as ‘participated’, ‘engaged’, ‘observed’, ‘gained’, and ‘involved’.
  • Keep each bullet point concise and precise; include points with supporting evidence.
  • Do NOT use personal pronouns (like – I, me, us, we) in the resume.

MBA Resume Format FAQs

Q. How to write an MBA resume that stands out?

A. Applicants applying abroad for MBA, will most likely have to submit a resume or CV. An MBA resume stands out if:

  1. A crisp and methodical MBA resume format is used to present the information.
  2. It is concise, not more than one page, discussing all important and relevant information.
  3. It is divided into proper sections, with proper spacing.
  4. It provides clarity to your vision, goals, and what you finally aspire to achieve.
  5. The resume is drafted with utmost precision and is error-free.

Q. What if my resume for MBA exceeds one page?

A. In case the applicant’s MBA resume exceeds one page, he/she should try to continue revising it, removing extra or unnecessary details, till the document fits in the stipulated length. Rules vary from university to university, but usually most institutions ask for a one page document. If the rules are stern, then applicants must adhere to it and not flout them. In case the applicants do not follow the rules, they will be penalized, or maybe their resumes would not be assessed.

Q. What are the disadvantages of writing a lengthy MBA resume for abroad?

A. There are a lot of disadvantages of writing a lengthy MBA resume, such as:

  • The lengthier the resume, the more boring it gets for the reader.
  • There are also chances that the reader gets disinterested and leaves it half way.
  • It can be exhausting to find major details in a lengthy resume; hence, one must be cautious and concise.
  • If the resume is lengthy and not in a proper format, it can also be rejected and not assessed further.
  • Finally, applicants who explain too much and write everything in detail can also be at a disadvantage.

Thus, avoid lengthy resumes and constrict your words; make the resume to the point; follow the MBA resume format and avoid beating around the bush.

Q. Are there any MBA resume samples to follow?

A. The universities usually provide a brief of the kind of MBA resume they require from their prospective applicants. So, applicants just need to pick the details, create a format, and finally formulate a resume. The resume should ideally include all major pointers as well. There may be MBA resume samples provided by the university in question; in case they are available, they can be considered. If not, then applicants should just follow the guidelines and get done with their resume.

Q. Can I use the MBA resume format for other programmes like MS and UG?

A. Although resumes for all courses include a few common details, the resume format usually differs. For MBA programme, work experience is given more importance, while for MS programmes, academic details carry more worth to the admissions committee. In case of an Undergraduate resume, projects, co-curricular and extracurricular activities, and other achievements are considered more important. Therefore, it is wise to use MBA resume format for applying to MBA and other management related courses.

Q. How to describe work experience on an MBA resume?

A. As work experience can be an important aspect of an MBA applicant, the MBA resume format suggests to keep work experience before other details about the candidate. However, the way the work experience is described in a resume, can make all the difference. You must start by mentioning about the current experience or the most recent one, followed by previous work experiences. Include your designation, department, company name, location, and duration (both joining and ending month year). Follow that up with your roles and responsibilities, in bullet points, along with achievements. You can also briefly mention about significant projects, if any. As the MBA resume is just one page, it is better to include only significant responsibilities, which are aligned with the MBA programme.
