MBBS abroad

Indian students studying MBBS in Ukraine who had to abruptly return to India due to the Ukraine-Russia conflict are in for a surprise. The Government of India has informed the Supreme Court that all Indian students who had to return from war-torn Ukraine, China and the Philippines during the COVID-19 would be given two attempts to clear the MBBS final exams both Part 1 & Part 2 (theory & practical) without enrolling in any existing medical college.

After clearing the two exams, candidates would be required to complete two years of compulsory rotatory internship, with the first year being a free internship and the second year being paid internship as decided by the National Medical Commission (NMC).

The syllabus for Part 1 and Part 2 (theory & practical) would be as per the existing NMC syllabus. The students would be required to clear Part 1 to be eligible to appear for Part 2. While the theory (Part 1) exam would be held centrally and physically on the same pattern as the Indian MBBS exam, the practical (Part 2) would be held by a few government medical colleges that are assigned the duty to conduct. As mentioned above, the students are required to clear both parts of the MBBS exam to be eligible for the compulsory two years rotatory internship, the first year being free and the second being paid.

Over 18,000 medical students who were studying MBBS in Ukraine had to abruptly come back to India from war-hit Ukraine. They were left stranded as many were looking for ways to complete their medical degree in their own country without any relief. However, taking everything into consideration, the government of India formed a committee under the chairmanship of the Directorate General of Health Services with representations from the National Medical Council (NMC) which recommended that the returned students of penultimate year and who further studied online would be given a chance to clear the MBBS final exam.

The committee and the government of India have emphasized that this is strictly a one-time relief and should not become a basis for similar decisions in the future.
