Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) is a private institute located in Auckland, New Zealand. It is a Category One institute, i.e., it has the highest possible educational rating according to the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). MIT has five campuses and several schools under each study area to provide diverse educational programmes to students across the world. The institute is one of the largest education providers of vocational, professional, and technical studies for students in the country. MIT builds valuable connections with industries, individuals, and businesses to impart knowledge to its students. With a total staff of over 660, the institute has a student/faculty ratio of 17:1. Every year it is home to more than 14,000 students, including over 1,000 international students.

Manukau offers various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including, degree courses, certificates, and diplomas. At the postgraduate level, it only has a handful of courses such as graduate diplomas in Business and Management, Digital Technologies, Engineering and Logistics, and a graduate certificate in Social Services.

Eligibility & Documents Required
What are the eligibility requirements?
International applicants must meet both the academic entry requirements and English language entry requirements to be eligible for direct entry. Apart from this, the institute has country-specific requirements, such as for Indian aspirants, the requirements for undergraduate programmes are given below.
UG Diploma or Certificate: Students must have an All India Senior School Certificate (10 +2) with at least 55% marks in four academic subjects. English language requirements are as follows:

Graduate Diploma (Level 7): Applicants must have an IELTS score of 6.0 with no score below 5.5 and any one of the qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in any field excluding the specific graduate diploma field, or
- A Level 6 or 7 diploma and relevant work and/or life experience (equivalent to a bachelor’s degree); or
- Evidence of equivalent practical, professional or educational experience e.g. three years full-time work experience (relevant to business studies).
For Graduate Diploma in Accounting, evidence of current knowledge of Accounting at an introductory level is required. For the Graduate Diploma in Professional Accounting, applicants are required to have successfully completed a bachelor’s degree.
Graduate Certificate in Cross-Cultural Supervision (Level 7): Applicants must have an IELTS (Academic) band score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in writing (or equivalent). They should also meet the following entry requirements:
- Have a qualification of an appropriate NZQF Level 6 or 7 in a human services and/or other people related profession, or
- Evidence that the applicant is capable of study at Level 7 (applicants may be asked to complete a written piece of work to demonstrate academic ability), along with two years’ work experience. Applicants must be currently in or willing to be in a supervisory or supervisee relationship.
What all documents are needed for application?
All academic transcripts submitted to the institute must be in English. Students are advised to get the documents translated if they are not in English by the verified Notary Public Services or Lawyers or Education Consultants. Other documents required for international students during the application process are:

Scholarships & Financial Aid
Is there any scholarship or financial aid available for international students?
Manukau does not offer any scholarships to international applicants. However, it produces a booklet about various grants and scholarships offered by community organisations, government departments and businesses to which international students can also avail themselves. Apart from this, international students can also apply for external scholarships offered by external or governmental organisations and companies.
Admission Process
When do the admissions start?
Manukau offers admission all around the year. A majority of the courses are offered in the February or July intake, while others are offered in January, March, April, May, June, August, September, and October. Students are advised to check the respective course pages to know which courses are offered in each intake. Similarly, application deadlines will differ for each course or programme depending on the intake a students is targeting. Exact closing dates can be found on the respective course pages.
What is the application process?

When will I hear from the university after I submit my application?
Students will hear from the institute within six to eight weeks of submitting their applications. Successful applicants will receive an Offer of Place by email. This will include information on tuition and insurance fees, the date of payment, methods of payment and a copy of the MIT refund policy.

What are the chances to get into this university?
The institute is moderately competitive and selective while reviewing applicants. MIT evaluates all incoming applications individually. If students meet the selection criteria, they will be contacted for further information. Applicants must meet the minimum English language requirements and eligibility criteria set by the institute to get direct admission to their chosen courses. The average GPA of the students is 2.5 on a scale of 4.0, and the average percentage is 70%.
How many Indian/international students are studying at the university?
Every year, over 15,000 students choose to study at Manukau, including 1,000 international students. In 2017, about 14,545 students were enrolled at MIT. As per its 2019 annual reports, the institute enrolled a total of 13,922 students, including 6,121 full-time equivalent students and 842 international students. Out of the total student population, 43% were female and 57% were male students.
Part Time Work While Studying
Can I work while studying here?
International students can work on-campus or off-campus while studying at the institute. Students are allowed to work for a maximum of 20 hours a week during a study semester. During vacations and holidays, students can work full-time. The institute advises students not to neglect their studies while working. These work opportunities allow students to live in the country easily. The eligibility requirements to work while studying for international students are:
- Must have a New Zealand study visa
- A valid work permit
- Students must be enrolled in a full-time study programme at the institute
- Students cannot work for more than 20 hours a week while school is in session
- Students must be enrolled in a course worth 120 credits
Off-campus Work: Students can also broaden their work experience by volunteering for on-campus work or applying for internships. Is on-campus housing available?
The institute does not provide on-campus housing to international students. However, the institute’s International Team can arrange a homestay for students who have requested for it in their application forms. The cost for homestays range between NZD 260 to NZD 300 per week and is payable directly to Manukau. Students can choose live in the Manukau area or Auckland central. Do note that students must stay a minimum of six weeks in a homestay before choosing other accommodation.
Apart from this, international applicants can also stay at the Student Village, which is MIT’s safe and sociable student accommodation. It is an affordable modern accommodation where students can become part of a friendly community and build lifelong friendships. Cost of Living
